Notre Dame Catholic Primary School
Foundations for Life Long Learning 30 May 2019
Dear Parents and Staff
I hope families are able to take advantage of the extra long weekend that our Staff Professional Development Day, tomorrow, and the WA Day public holiday on Monday have provided. Our Staff day has a focus on wellness and the maintenance of a healthy work/life balance. Some members of society only see the relatively short days of student attendance and the weeks of holidays the school staff receive. What they don’t see in committed staff are the many hours that are spent in preparation and planning, the marking and assessments and the development of plans to motivate children to achieve their best. It is acknowledged that happy workers are generally much more productive than their less happy peers. It is our goal to ensure that all staff are supported to be in the best place that they can be so that they are able to provide a happy, challenging, engaging learning experience for all children at Notre Dame. We have a range of activities planned throughout the day that we hope will both challenge and enlighten the staff.
DUTY OF CARE
There are still a few children each day who arrive well before staff commence supervision at 8.00am. Please ensure that children are not dropped off prior to 8.00am and are collected by 3.15pm each afternoon. Children who are not picked up at 3.00pm must go to the undercover area as there is a teacher on duty.
Some parents are also collecting children from Daly St. This can be a very dangerous practice as parents often double park while their children get into the car. Our drive through pick up operates very efficiently in the Parish carpark each afternoon and provides a far safer option for parents. Are the few moments that are “saved” worth the risk to your child’s safety?
UNIFORM
I was approached last year about boys wearing their shorts throughout the year as part of their uniform. I was happy to agree to this as long as, in Terms 2 and 3, children had access to long trousers when they were needed for events such as school photos. Whilst we, at school, are happy for boys to wear shorts, it is ultimately the parents’ decision to make rather than the child.
FIRST EUCHARIST
Please remember to keep our Year Four First Eucharist candidates and their families in your prayers as they continue their preparation to receive the Sacrament on 15 and 16 June. The next major step along their journey is their reconciliation evening next Thursday, 6 June, at 6.00pm in our Parish Church.
REMINDER
Pyjama Day is only two weeks away so don’t forget to wear your pyjamas to school and bring in your gold coin donation in support of the homeless on Wednesday 12 June.

The Kindergarten students have had a wonderful start to Term Two.
Religious Education
The Kindergarten students have enjoyed participating in the LifeLink ‘Big Book of Love and Hope' activity. LifeLink Day 2019 will officially be launched on Wednesday 5 June 2019 during WA Week.
During our mat session, we have also started to talk about the weather and the four seasons. We have been curious to learn about rainbows that God has created. We have talked about the seven colours of the rainbow and discussed how they are formed.
Numeracy
The Kindergarten students have been learning about patterns. Students enjoyed making an AB pattern bracelet or a necklace out of Fruit Loops and other patterning hands on activities.
Literacy
On Wednesday 1 May the Kindergarten students had a Mother’s Day incursion from Bunnings in Belmont. A big thank you to Lauren and Madi (activities organiser) for assisting the Kindergarten children.
Our Mums appreciated our calico shopping bags decorated with drawings to use or just keep as special keep-sakes.
On Friday 10 May Kindergarten Mums/Caregivers were invited to the Mothers' Day morning session. The Kindergarten students were very excited about spending some time with their Mum/caregiver at Kindy and doing some very special activities with them.
Possum Goes to School
During our mat session, the students listened to a story called ‘Possum Goes to School’ by Melanie Carter.
The Kindergarten students used clay to make a possum and also a drawing/painting of their favourite part of the story.
Incursion
On Monday 13 May the Kindergarten and Pre-Primary students had an incursion from Constable Care. The students and staff had an enjoyable puppet experience on the topic of ‘First Aid Heroes’.

PARENT TV
Everyone parents worst nightmare is when their child starts to have a big meltdown, especially in a public place.
Dr Vanessa Lapointe, R Psych goes through the why our children can "lose their mind" and how to respond in those situations.
You can watch the full video here:
They are quite a different beast to when we were kids. We didn’t even call them play dates then – you just went to a friend’s house to play!
Now they are highly orchestrated events, with snacks, activities and parental collaboration. Even the humble sleepover has upped the ante.
However, despite the increased parental involvement in our children’s social lives, there are just as many, if not more opportunities for problematic situations to arise.
One of the major issues being technology.
Sam, Britta and the ParentTV Team.
