Good Morning Stanwood Middle School Families!
Empowering Our Spartans to Learn
With just nine school days left until the start of second semester, the school is buzzing--some students are doing a last minute scramble to make up any missing work, others are planning for a schedule change, and everyone is wrapping up units of study for a fresh start. For our 8th graders, it is very close to starting the process to register for high school. Counselors from Stanwood High School will be in advisory classes on February 1st.
Skyward will show classes for next semester on Tuesday. Our counseling office will only change a student's schedule for academic reasons. We can not change schedules for lunches.
Please help your Spartan navigate the end of the semester with wrapping up their units of study, completing any missing work, and getting ready for class changes come January 31.
As a reminder, there is no school on Monday, January 16 in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Our leadership class and ASB officers presented a wonderful assembly last Tuesday to give students an overview as to why we have the day off.
There is also no school on Monday, January 30 for semester grading.
PTO Meeting
Our next PTO meeting is Tuesday, January 17 at 5:00 p.m. in room 109. All are welcome--come learn more about this great organization that supports our school.
For our 8th Grade Students & Families
You are invited to the annual Stanwood High School Class Fair. This event will be held on Feb. 6th from 5:30 to 6:30 PM in the Stanwood High School Commons. This is your opportunity to learn about the courses and programs offered at Stanwood High School. Following the Class Fair, there will be a Parent Information Session in the Stanwood High School Performing Arts Center at 6:45.
Third Season Sports--Girls Basketball and Wrestling
Believe it or not, third season sports are just around the corner! If your Spartan is interested in Girls 7th and 8th Grade Basketball or 6th-8th Grade Co-Ed Wrestling, please use the Stanwood Middle School Athletic Registration form to sign them up for the season.
Girls Basketball starts with its first practice on Tuesday, January 31 with the first game on February 14.
Co-ed Wrestling begins on February 6 with the first match on March 1.
Due to our continued shortage of bus drivers in the district, we ask you to also fill out the Parent Transportation Letter waiver to have on file in the event we can not have buses drive us to our away meets and you can drive your Spartan to their competition.
Free Sports Clinic for 6th Grade Girls
On Monday, January 30th, SHS will host a free Sports Clinic to celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day! 2:00-4:30pm
3-6th grade participants, who attend school (or live) in the Stanwood-Camano School District, are invited to join us for an afternoon of active fun! Everyone is welcome, no experience needed, and we will rotate through stations to introduce skills in a handful of our girls sports!

Cheer Clinic
SHS Spartan Spirit Club is putting on a two-day cheer clinic!
On Wednesday, January 18th, Little Cheerleaders will be placed in groups with SHS Cheerleaders as their group leaders. They will be taught basic cheer moves, a cheer, and a brand-new dance. These will be performed at halftime on Thursday, January 19th, at the Spartans varsity girls’ basketball game.
Each little cheerleader will receive a t-shirt, poms, and a hair bow on Wednesday. For pre-registration and the guarantee of a 2023 t-shirt, please submit registration and payment by Tuesday, January 10.
Homework Club
For the next six weeks on Mondays and Thursdays, Mrs. Thomas will have an hour dedicated after school to really help our Spartans be empowered to learn with volunteers from the SHS National Honor Society tutoring across all subjects. The club meets after school until 3:10--please make sure your Spartan has a ride home after getting some extra help.
Nominations open for Highly Capable Program
The nomination period is now open for Stanwood-Camano School District’s Highly Capable Program. The class is for exceptionally advanced learners in reading and math for students in grades K-12.
Read more about the Highly Capable Program HERE
Nomination packets are available from school building secretaries or can be downloaded HERE. The nominations are due by January 26.
Get school updates via text
The school district is adding text messaging capability to our school communication system, which currently uses phone calls and emails. The system will be configured to send text messages to cell phone numbers whose recipients have agreed to receive them.
Many of you already received a text from 67587 earlier this week requesting you to opt-in to receive important informational text messages from your child’s school. You simply need to Reply Y to confirm (messaging and data rates may apply).
Alternatively, you can text “Y” to 67587 to opt-in to receive texts. In the future, if a recipient’s cellphone number is changed or a new number added to our information system database, the new number will automatically be sent an opt-In message.
Have a great weekend!

Spartan Pride Awards
Each week we find time either during lunch or the morning announcements to honor the students who show of PRIDE. You'll get a letter home and the PRIDE slip from the teacher for prominent display on your refrigerator. We appreciate all of our Spartans and how they work hard across so many areas each day.
Meet The Spartan Staff
This week we are shining the spotlight on Katie Diel, one of our 7th and 8th Grade Science teachers.
Mrs. Diel is a 24-year Stanwood Middle School teaching veteran who is retiring at the end of this year! Before teaching at Stanwood, Mrs. Diel worked as a para in Lakewood and then went back to school to become a teacher.
Besides sharing the love of science with her students through labs and stick bugs, Mrs. Diel creates zen gardens and loves gardening outside of school.
Her favorite thing about Stanwood Middle School is--wait for it--"hands down the 8th graders." Mrs. Diel said that retiring this year is bittersweet--she loves ending the day with her 8th graders with their "ah-ha" moments and fun learning in her classes.
