These first six weeks of school have really been packed with lots of activities and great instruction.

All our McNeil students spent some great time down at Bishop’s Beach and the Spit picking up trash and recording the items collected for our participation in the Coast Walk. All students have a unique button to remember their involvement in that community service project. Thank you for your support by chaperoning and pledging money for the fundraising campaign.

We also had a great Harvest Fair with lots of wonderful entries and lots of families showing for our Open House.

It’s hard to believe that the end of First Quarter is in just two weeks and our annual Fall Carnival will be happening just two weeks after that on Saturday, 26 October. Our Community Council is already busy planning a great carnival and will need your help.

We are looking forward to Sharlene Cline coming this next Monday, 30 September as our Artist In School this year. Sharlene will be working with all our students using Chinese brushstroke techniques to create some wonderful visual artwork.

This is shaping up to be another great year of school at McNeil Canyon. Please stay tuned for all the great activities and events that will be available throughout the year and remember that it is your direct involvement that makes this such an amazing school. All of these activities represent a lot of work from teachers, students and parents. We would not be able to provide or accomplish these without your support. Keep up the great work!!

The McNeil Canyon Elementary Community Council will meet again on Friday, October 4th at 8:30am in the staff lounge. All parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.

All students are invited to make a poster (no bigger than 12” x 18”) to help let people know about our upcoming Fall Carnival. All poster contest entries will receive an immediate prize and a grand prize will be awarded October 4th. As part of the grand prize this year, your poster will be published in the Homer News paper. Posters must be submitted by Friday, Oct. 4th. The poster must have the student’s name, grade, and teacher's name on the back and MUST have an event information label (available in the office) OR you may LEGIBLY write the following on your poster:

Additional information that you could include if you wish is: “Come Join the Fun!”. Food, Prizes, Games, Haunted House (pending 6th grade parent participation), everyone is welcome! Please make posters family friendly. Happy creating!

We are also collecting new or gently used stuffed animals for the prize stand. You can drop off the stuffed animals in the dragon box in front of the office with Joy.

Over the weekend, Alowan Rogers competed in Chapman Elementary' s chess competition and took first place in the 3rd though 5th grade category! Way to go Alowan!! We are proud of you, say we are proud of you!!

It is time to send your students to school with warm/ water proof layers. We are experiencing some colder temperatures. Your students will need warm coats, gloves, boots and hats added to their outdoor gear.

Friday, October 11th is the end of our 1st quarter. This is an in-service day for staff and there will be no school.

Friday, October 18th is an early release day. School will end at 1:20 and buses will arrive at their stops an hour and a half earlier than normal.

Student Council is sponsoring dress-like-your-favorite-book-or-movie-character day on Wednesday, October 23rd. Join the fun!

Conferences will be held on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 24th & 25th. There will be no school on these days. Notices with your conference day and time will be sent home on Thursday, October 10th.

The annual McNeil Canyon Elementary Fall Carnival will be held on Saturday, October 26th from 3:00 - 6:00 pm. This is a fun-filled evening for the whole family and community. The Fall Carnival is sponsored by Community Council and is 1 of 2 major fundraisers for the year. Plus, it's a lot of fun! Parents will be receiving a phone call from their class parent representative asking them to help at the Carnival. Your time commitment can be as short as one hour. Please consider helping with this great event. We couldn't do it with out you all!!

***Last year's event was so popular that the line for ticket sales was out the door!

This year we are offering early ticket sales exclusively to McNeil families. Bring cash or check to the school during PT conferences, buy early at the front office, and avoid the long ticket sales line.

Community Council is hoping to receive gently used or new stuffed animals to use as prizes for a few of the carnival booths. There is a dragon box outside of the front office ready to receive these donations. Thank you for helping make our Fall Carnival memorable!

This year's order forms for school shirts & hoodies are all online. See the link below. We only order these once a year so if you would like a McNeil Canyon Elementary School shirt or hoodie, please click the link below and place your order no later than October 10th.

Parents are invited to join their child and the principal for lunch on Tuesday, October 22nd at 11:55 am.

Spotlight Student forms are being sent home with these children today. Please return them as soon as possible so they can be placed on our Spotlight Student bulletin board. Thank you!!
