Tech Time with Mr. Holt
One of the pieces of feedback that we received on the recent parent survey was that parents really didn't know how we were teaching technology, so I wanted to share what we work on in Tech PLC. We cover a wide range of issues from Digital Citizenship all the way to beginning principles of computer programming.
In Kindergarten, we go to a website called Starfall.com, and I work with the kids on basic computing skills like how to use a mouse, website navigation and not eating the keyboard(if you've ever been in a computer lab with a bunch of 5 and 6 year olds - you know this is important!).
1st grade is using an awesome website - www.lightbot.com. I love it for a few reasons - the kids have to use spatial reasoning and problem solving skills to program a robot to go through several challenges.
2nd and 3rd Grade are using a website this month to work on their typing skills - www.typingclub.com. Each student has their own log in that keeps track of all their attempts and has statistics of Words Typed Per Minute, Accuracy and more. Their usernames are first name and last name, and then their password is their student ID.
Please let me know if you have any questions about what we are doing in Tech PLC class, and I will be glad to give you more information.
GT Spring Referrals (1st-12th) and Kindergarten Screening
Each year Lago Vista ISD evaluates all kindergarteners to identify students for the Gifted and Talented program. During this screening process, with your consent, your child will complete one or more assessments. These assessments will be administered at school, and will provide us with multiple measures of ability, creativity, and academic aptitude. If you signed a consent form when you registered your child for kindergarten, you do not need to sign a new consent form. If we do not have a consent form on file for your child, one will be going home in this week's Friday folder. Please return consent forms to Randenne Kelley, GT Facilitator, by Thursday, February 1st.
The spring referral window for students in grades 1-12 is now open. Please visit the Curriculum and Instruction page on the district website, or click on the link below, for the referral form. All referral forms are due February 1st.

COLLEGE DAY IS EVERY WEDNESDAY...WEAR YOUR FAVORITE COLLEGE SHIRT!
Mrs. Leslie Kudrna - Second Grade Teacher
1. How long have you worked in Lago Vista and what did you do before you started at LVES?
This is my 3rd year at Lago Vista. Before my family and I came to LVISD I was a PreK teacher in Sonora ISD.
2. Where are you from originally?
I'm originally from McKinney, TX.
3. Tell us about your family...
I have been married to Coach K for 8 years. He teaches at the middle school and coaches at the High School, football, girls basketball, and track. We have 3 kids: Karter (8), Kooper (6), and Keelye (3).
4. What are your favorite books? Favorite restaurant? Video game?
My favorite book is Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco. I read it every year to my class! It is a great story of a grandmother and her grandchild overcoming her fear of thunderstorms.
My favorite restaurant is Chuy's and Torchy's! I love some good Tex-Mex!
My favorite video game would have to be N64 Mario Cart. I haven't played in a LONG time but it is my absolute favorite and I will totally throw bananas at you to win!
5. What sports do you love to watch? What sports do you love to play?
I love to watch football and baseball. I also enjoy watching track.
I love to play volleyball. I played for a little while in high school and I had a lot of fun!
6. What made you want to be a teacher?
I wanted to become a teacher because I knew I wanted to work with kids. I coached gymnastics and cheer in high school and really enjoyed working with younger kids. I love seeing the spark ignite when a student mastered a skill. That has carried over into the classroom. When a student finally gets a skill they have been working on their faces light up. That spark is what brings me to work every day and keeps me going! My students are simply amazing!
Mrs. Sharon Cochran - Functional Academics Teacher

4. What are your favorite hobbies?
I don't really have a favorite book, I love to read all kinds. I love reading Robert Munch books with my son.
5. What is your favorite part of your job?
I love working with the kids, and finding new ways to help them learn.

Counselor's Corner
Hello LVES Families! Has your child completed their Great Kindness Challenge checklist? It is not too late to turn them in! (They were in last Friday’s folder, and I can email you another copy if you need one.) Each child that completes the Acts of Kindness checklist and turns it in with their name and teacher’s name will receive a Character Award along with a certificate for a free kid’s meal at Mighty Fine! The last day to turn in completed checklists is Tuesday, January 30. Thank you for encouraging your child to be a kind, helpful, and respectful person--these simple acts of kindness are helpful in creating a happy and safe school climate & culture!
In our counselor guidance classes this month, we are continuing our Project Vinátta activity of painting Kindness Rocks. Students will also be learning about the character trait of Citizenship. I will be teaching what it means to be a good citizen--a person who obeys rules and laws, and does their share to help make their home, community, and world a better place for everyone.
If you have any questions, you may reach me at amy_sexton@lagovista.txed.net or (512) 267-8300 ext. 4504. Thank you!

¡Hola familias LVES!
~Aesop
