The Connection
Hello, everyone!
Our local leaders from certified unions met this week to discuss the upcoming election, negotiations for the 25-26 school year and our continued outreach to new hires. Leaders from all over the region shared positive experiences on their conversations with new educators. I was reminded how many strong union leaders I have met who have sited a veteran teacher checking in with them not only as to how they became a union member, but also why they stayed in the teaching profession as long as they have. The relationships we create now can mentor people in amazing ways. Our leaders also expressed frustration at the lack of collaboration from administrators. It's important to remember that we should expect to hear NO in the first round of meet and confer conversations or negotiations. I know that sounds disheartening but remember that a union's real power is to mobilize members to influence decision makers and that generally happens away from the conversations at the table. Your directors are happy to help you brainstorm and strategize how to make that a reality.
Lastly, we are entering another election season. Elon has dumped 1.6 million into our state and it's about to become a circus. The most important thing you can do is to text friends and family to tell them how you feel about this election as a public education advocate. We have a ton of opportunities for you to be involved!
In Solidarity,
Kristin Lytie
