MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Greetings MVCSD Community,
This Wednesday, I presented the first 2025 State of the District Address to faculty and staff in the Mount Vernon City School District. I provided updates and information about the upcoming building reconfiguration and what the future will look like for the District. While school closures are difficult circumstances, our employees have always put the needs of the students first. I am so grateful for the people who work in this District, and I appreciate them giving me their time. I will provide another update at the next meeting in April.
Students in Andrea Sherlock’s English 2 Honors class at Mount Vernon High School completed a project where they created three-dimensional Bloom Balls. This research project incorporates artwork to provide students with an engaging and fun project to work on their research skills. We place a great importance on our high school students doing research papers and projects, and these projects were a fun way to get students ready for the research papers they will write next. When learning is fun, and we get back to the basics – which includes thorough research – our students can move forward to mastery!
This week’s Senior Spotlight celebrates Jhaelyn Jacobs, a senior from Denzel Washington School of the Arts. Jhaelyn has worked hard to achieve high grades and stay engaged in the DWSA community, all while running her own small business selling crocheted items! Her exemplary record does not go unnoticed, with her placing on the high honor roll and principal’s honor roll every marking period and even becoming the vice president of the DWSA Student Council. She also started two clubs at her school: the Textiles Club and the Community Service Club. Jhaelyn has had a lasting impact on the DWSA community, and I am so excited to see what she accomplishes in the future.
The Mount Vernon High School CTE Automotive program has partnered with the Lincoln Technical Institute and Rockland Community College for two separate articulation agreements! This means that students in the program are now able to earn college credits towards the two institutions. This amazing opportunity will help open doors for our students and help them be ready for both college and careers!
Kindest Regards,
Dr. K. Veronica Smith
Acting Superintendent of Schools
