The Lion's Share
August 2024
From the Principal . . .
We have had such a great start to this school year. Thank you all for attending our meet the teacher night and for bringing excitement and positivity even though it was crazy hot. Speaking of hot, we will continue to keep car riders inside while the temps are high. This increases wait time a bit as they exit the building, but on a good note we have decreased our wait time each day and we appreciate all of your patience.
Teachers are starting to complete Beginning of the Year testing, which will give us good baseline data to support students and help them grow this year.
Check out the information below as we have so many events already planned and many opportunities to get involved this year. I am very much looking forward to another great year with our community; your support and involvement help make our school a truly incredible place.
Thanks,
Andrea Emerick
Principal

Pokemon Cards
Pokemon cards should not be brought to school. We don't want students to lose their cards or make a trade with a friend that they regret. Help us out by keeping them at home.
ID's needed for Bus Riders
Students who ride the bus must have their ID badge in order to ride the bus to and from school.
Gifted Testing
Parents may request Gifted Testing from now until August 9, 2024
- Child testing needs to be one year removed from taking the last assessment
- Parents fill out form online to sign up https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1m_TOg7WrHYBa48MC-a6IA0-kom8R8lLKz7YwxXWRcks/edit
- Testing will take place between August 12 and August 30
Parking Lot Reminders
- Only drop off and pick up students in the designated line in the main parking lot.
- Avoid parking in marked spots, several spots have been paid for through a fundraiser. Keep those spots free.
- Don't stop and wait or park in the RED line areas. This makes it extremely difficult to turn to exit and slows down parent pick up
- Thanks for your patience as we keep kids inside during the heat. It takes them a little longer to get to the parent pick up line.
- If you are parking and walking up, head to the walker's door.
- Use all designated crosswalks for safety.

Social Worker Corner
Our Second Step program provides our students an opportunity to learn about and practice positive skills for their lives. Topics include: Goal Setting, Emotions, Empathy and Kindness and Problem Solving.
Welcome to the 2024-25 school year! We all know that daily school attendance is so important, but did you know that missing just 2 days of school each month means a student will miss 10% of the school year or almost a full month of learning? Explain to your child that attending school is their very first job, where they are learning and building friendships. Regular attendance helps foster a sense of belonging and connection and helps your child develop healthy habits related to school. Let’s start the school year strong with good attendance! Reach out to your child’s teacher or the social worker, Mrs Dippre, if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s attendance.
The GPS Fall schedule of classes for parents and guardians is below. There are great opportunities to learn more about positive ways to support children.

Free Helmet Giveaway for Gilbert Community
The Gilbert Parks and Recreation Foundation, supported by community donations and grants from Dignity Health, is offering free helmets! They have approximately 300 helmets available in various styles, sizes, and colors.
These helmets can be picked up at one of five locations in Gilbert, AZ, during normal operating hours, while supplies last at the following locations:
- Freeride Bike Co., 3143 E Williams Field Rd, Gilbert, AZ 85295
- Global Bikes & E-Bikes , 835 N Gilbert Rd, #111, Gilbert, AZ 85234
- Bike Masters, 2244 E Williams Field Rd #101, Gilbert, AZ 85295
- Pedego Electric Bikes, 459 N Gilbert Rd, Unit 1, Gilbert, AZ 85234
- NControl Driving School, 1663 E Ray Rd #103, Gilbert, AZ 85296
To receive a helmet, parents simply sign a waiver at the pickup location. This initiative responds to the increasing number of motor vehicle collisions involving people riding bicycles, e-scooters, and e-bikes, who are especially vulnerable on our roads. We encourage riders to wear a properly secured helmet and remind drivers to be extra cautious and reduce their speed, especially in areas with people walking and bicycling. Please talk to the kids and teens in your life about the importance of helmet-wearing, paying attention, and following traffic laws. Let’s work together to make our streets safer for everyone!
