News from the Principal
Greetings WE Families,
It has been great to get settled back into the daily routine after the much-needed Fall Break. I hope the inclement weather did not cause too much concern or damage for you here locally. My heart goes out to those who have suffered loss and damage caused by the storms.
Fall Expeditions are starting in each grade level. Our kindergarten zoologists kicked off their learning of living and non-living things by comparing worms and gummy worms. The Petting Zoo was a big hit also. Thank you to our PTA for providing these exciting experiences for the students. Our first and second graders have also begun their study of animals and bugs. It is an interesting time to learn here at Westchester.
It is great to see you all in the building for your conferences. I know you are hearing great things about all the hard work that the students are doing and the progress they have already made this year. Thank you for scheduling time with your child’s teacher.
Calendar Reminders:
September 30th-October 11th Parent Teacher Conferences
October 25th: Community Circle - ALL
October 26th: PTA Fall Festival
October 24th - 30th: Book Fair
From your very grateful principal,
Christine Knox

Reminders
School Lunch Policy: Please be sure to maintain a positive lunch balance for your child. This will help us avoid any unexpected lunch changes for students. Check your Parent Portal frequently to make sure your child has adequate funds for the cafeteria. You may also find the Parent Portal app (for Apple or Android) to be more convenient.
Hola familia!
On September 15th we started a month of celebration for all Hispanic people who live in the United States. We celebrate our heritage, the significant presence and influence of Hispanics in our society, and our broad spectrum of traditions and culture.
Here is the link to the video shared at the last Community Circle where you can meet the students with hispanic roots at Westchester.
We encourage you to explore and to join us to celebrate “The Hispanic Heritage Month” in some way! How? There are many ways to celebrate! Here, are just a few of them:
Check the calendar for these events!
In Decatur, Doraville and Gwinnett (Plaza Las Americas)
Around Atlanta: Atlanta Events
Listen to Music
A great way to teach children about Hispanic culture is by exposing them to music in Spanish. Choose age-appropriate music or music by key figures in Spanish music or just sing along with the 21 Speaking countries' song in Rockalingua (username and password: westchester).
Get into the Kitchen
Food is always something that reminds people of home. Hispanic culture has a plethora of cuisine to enjoy from every Hispanic culture. Parents can get into the kitchen with their children and prepare recipes from diverse Hispanic cultures. Another option is to eat at a Hispanic restaurant and try something new. Nowadays, it is easy to find Mexican tacos in the Metropolitan Atlanta area, Argentinian empanadas, and El Salvadorian pupusas. Try the favorite sandwich of Sra. Rodés: Cuban sandwiches. Very close to us, here at 1365 Clairmont Rd we can find ”Buena gente”, a Cuban take out. Metro Atlanta has some amazing Mexican restaurants; here are some favorites. Plaza Fiesta’s restaurants offer lots of options for Latin American cuisine. Buford Highway also has some great options.
Read Spanish or Bilingual Books
Books and stories often tell a story that reflects the background of a certain culture. You can read Spanish language or bilingual books to your children to learn more about various Hispanic cultures. We are developing a virtual Spanish library here.
Have a great Hispanic Heritage Month celebration! Celebremos juntos!
With appreciation,
Señora Rodés

We are seeking SILENT AUCTION DONATIONS!

If you respond 'yes' to any of these questions, we hope you'll consider supporting the auction. We have an ambitious fundraising goal this year, and each company sponsorship, in-kind donation, and item will make a difference for our school.
- Do you own or work at a company that would sponsor our event at any level?
- Do you have a personal or professional skill or service that could be donated to the silent auction like massage therapy, photographer, landscape architect, interior design, etc.?
- Do you know a person, business, or organization that you'd be willing to connect us to for the auction? Feel free to email sarahwade2013@gmail.com, and thank you in advance!
Your 2024 Fall Festival committee is Marci Roberts, Amelia Boylan, Angelina Buzby, Emilie Lindberg, Katie Paisley and Sarah Wade.
