New Year, New Goals
Goals give us something to work towards, purpose to keep us motivated and – with a little luck and a lot of hard work – something to celebrate. Just like the adults around them, our students may be looking at the New Year as an opportunity to make new plans for growth and change. With only two weeks left of the second marking period, helping your student come up with achievable goals for the remainder of the school year can have many benefits. From increasing their self-confidence, to developing their work ethic and understanding what motivates them, to knowing when to ask for help, setting goals helps teens put action behind their ideas and shows them how to achieve a desired end result.
“SMART” is a commonly used acronym to help guide the goal-setting process. As you help your student plan out goals for the second half of the school year, keep the following in mind:
· S- Specific: The goal shouldn’t be too broad so they can focus their efforts clearly.
· M- Measurable: They should be able to see that progress is being made.
· A- Attainable: Goals should be realistically in reach. Is your student truly capable of committing to the amount of effort required?
· R- Relevant: Is the goal aligned with their values, interests, and long-term plans?
· T- Timely: The goal should include a deadline that gives them a defined time-frame.
Consider partnering with your teen and setting goals together, where you can both strive for things like better work-life balance, establishing healthier self-care habits, improving productivity at work or school, or breaking some bad habits. Partnering with them not only models the value of setting and achieving goals, but also gives you built-in support while strengthening your bond!
