7th Grade Armful of Love Food Drive: February 12 - 16
Valentine’s Day is coming soon, and it is time for the SHMS 7th Grade Class to show our community how much we care about them!
The 7th Grade Homerooms will be hosting the “Armful of Love Food Drive” from February 12th-16th. All donated items will be given to the local 360 Communities, so our donations will assist local families!
The “Armful of Love Food Drive” will also be a contest between homerooms. Students will bring in food items to increase points for their homeroom, and they can also donate household items and cleaning supplies to competing homerooms. These non-food items will deduct points from that homeroom’s score! At the end of the week, the homeroom with the most points per student will win a Pizza Party!
The “Armful of Love Food Drive” is the perfect way for our 7th grade class at SHMS to spread love and caring throughout our community. Thank you for participating in our winter community service project. The 6th Grade Class will have their food drive in the spring!
District 196 middle schools well represented at Future City competition
District 196 middle school students took two of the top five spots and seven of the 18 special awards at the Regional Future City Competition held Jan. 20 at Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount.
Sponsored by the National Engineers Week Foundation, Future City is a national, project-based learning experience where middle school students imagine, research, design and build cities of the future that showcase their solutions to a citywide sustainability issue. In this year’s challenge, teams designed a futuristic city that is 100% powered by electricity with energy generated from sources that keep citizens and the environment healthy and safe. Students work as a team with a teacher and engineer mentor to design their virtual city using software and other resources. They also research and write a 1,500-word essay about their city, build a tabletop scale model with recycled materials, develop a project plan and make a presentation to judges at the regional competition. The top finisher in each region qualifies for the national finals held in Washington, D.C. each February.
Team Nina Urqukuna from Scott Highlands Middle School finished in second place and won special awards for Best Future City Model, and Best Land Surveying Practices.
A total of nine teams from four District 196 middle schools participated in the competition. The following teams also won special awards:
- Team Niohogger from Scott Highlands won Best Transportation System, and Best Incorporation of Cultural and Historical Resources Into a City;
- Team Llumin from Black Hawk Middle School won the award for Safe Drinking Water, and
- Team I.S.S. Thoth from Rosemount Middle School won Most Innovative City Setting.
SHMS will begin MCA testing in April.
So why do our students take the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment or MCA?
The Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards are the statewide expectations for student learning in K-12 public schools. School districts are required to put state standards into place so all students have access to high-quality content and instruction. The MCA exam (along with the MAP test) is used to help guide teachers and differentiate their lessons.
There are 4 strands in the Minnesota middle school standards called Number & Operation, Algebra, Geometry & Measurement, and Data Analysis & Probability. Each standard has benchmarks that teachers try to reach in terms of what they teach each year in math. Follow these links to see the standards as written by the Minnesota Department of Education:
Why are the MCA Exams so important to our students, parents, and teachers?
- MCA exams are important measures to assess our students’ academic knowledge and proficiency and are compatible with information from previous grades so teachers can see patterns of growth.
- The results provide a snapshot of student learning success. Assessments are an integral part of instruction, as it determines whether or not the goals of education are being met. Assessment affects decisions about grades, placement, advancement, instructional needs, curriculum, and, in some cases, funding. Assessments inspire us to ask these hard questions: "Are we teaching what we think we are teaching?" "Are students learning what they are supposed to be learning?" "Is there a way to teach the subject better, thereby promoting better learning?"
- The assessment measures how our curriculum aligns with the Minnesota Academic Standards and our own District 196 standards. It provides data to be used by our teachers for strengthening instructional approaches.
- The MCA is a standardized exam that utilizes an array of different assessment methods (or different types of question formats like multiple choice, drag & drop, short answer, etc.) which provide multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate their understanding and knowledge. This is great practice as our students move into the high schools and prepare to take the MCA Math Exam and the ACT exam during their junior year. Our 33 Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MinnState.edu) use high school MCA results for course placement. If students receive a college-ready score, they may not need to pay for and take a remedial, noncredit course for that subject area.
- The MCA exam is a great way for students (and their parents) to see the culmination of their hard work over the past 7-9 years.
We challenge our students across the district to take the MCA exam seriously. Why not take the opportunity to see where your strengths lie? Those strengths may help guide you as you graduate from middle school, move on to high school, and eventually graduate to move on to earning a college degree or moving into the workforce.

What is meant by “Growth Mindset”? You might be hearing about it more and more from your children’s teachers and how they are using it in their classrooms. However, you might wonder, as a parent, how to encourage the growth mindset in your own home?
All parents, teachers, coaches, and students are welcome to join us. Learn how the brain works, how to praise kids, how to encourage your children to challenge themselves and that it is ok to make mistakes because that is how we learn. The concept of a growth mindset will also be discussed from a parent’s standpoint at home, in school and in co-curricular activities. Be challenged to learn something about your own mindset as well. Question and Answer will follow the presentation. Due to capacity limits, registration is required.

Growing Through Grief
If you have a student who is dealing with the loss of an immediate family member (sibling, parent, grandparent, caregiver) or individual who significantly influenced your student and feel they would benefit from participating in Park Nicollet's Growing Through Grief group, we would like to offer your student this grief group opportunity.
Scott Highlands Middle School will be hosting this group again; this year it will be facilitated by Jenny Simmonds, a licensed grief therapist through Park Nicollet. Group sessions will be held during the school day and will run throughout the school year. Our hope is that this group would begin sometime in October. If you are interested in having your student participate, please email your student's school counselor with the name of your student and they will contact you to provide further information.
Every Meal
Healthy eating is so important for students. At Scott Highlands Middle School, we work hard to ensure students receive a free healthy breakfast and lunch each day to support their developing brains and bodies. Research shows that students who eat regular, nutritious meals are more likely to attend school and engage in learning.
We are excited to partner with Every Meal again this year and offer a free weekend food program to all our students. You do not need to qualify or meet criteria to qualify for this free weekend food. You simply need to have students at home who would benefit from extra food.
Free for all families
No qualifications required for enrollment
Students enrolled in the program will receive a 4-5 pound bag of nutritious, nonperishable food each week
Every Meal does not collect information from families; privacy is protected
Families may enroll in the program anytime throughout the school year
