Starkey Bear Necessities
September 2024
We are off to a great start!
Dear Starkey Families,
Thank you for choosing Starkey Elementary for your child's education! We are off to a great start and look forward to continuing the positive momentum throughout this school year.
There were so many families who braved the torrential downpours on Open House Night! Thank you so much. Your dedication to your students and Starkey is noticed and appreciated.
As they do each year, arrival and dismissal processes are getting better each day. It is no small feat to safely and efficiently welcome and dismiss nearly 600 students each day, but we are getting it done!
Please remember to follow all of the arrival and dismissal procedures explained in our welcome back newsletter. Here is the link for your convenience and reference. https://secure.smore.com/n/tpg40
Your child's safety is our TOP priority, as I am sure that it is yours. Please take note that there is NO supervision for students prior to 8:15am unless they are enrolled in the YMCA. Students who are waiting at the "S" or elsewhere, prior to that time, are being left unattended. Please make sure that you are not dropping off early and leaving your children in a potentially dangerous situation with no adult supervision.
Here is the link to the Starkey web page that has a list of providers and phone numbers for aftercare (quite a few also offer before care!): After School Care Providers / After School Providers (pcsb.org)
Please read on for details on events that are happening at Starkey and highlights of the month!
Thank you again for your support and dedication.
Sincerely,
Ms. Kranzel

Library Whispers
Our library is about to open! Mrs. Ferstl and the Library Pages (PTA volunteers) have been getting ready for a SUPER new year with reading. Last year, our students nearly doubled their reading. The goal was 4,459 books. By the end of the school year, they’d checked out 7,823 books! Way to go, Starkey Bears! This year, we are going for the SUPER goal of 10,000 books read. Parents, you can help us with this goal by reading your child’s library books with them and to them. We will keep you posted each month with our latest reading numbers. Are you ready? Up, up and AWAY!

Counselor's Corner
I am Mr. Salyers, Starkey’s School Counselor. I am enjoying getting to know all of the students and getting ready to start our classroom lessons soon. We have Start with Hello Week coming up September 16-20, which is a way for everyone to identify social isolation and help address it. Lastly, please reach out to me if you need help with any resources. We have several at Starkey that can help support our families. Here is my contact information 727-547-7841 ext 2060, salyersj@pcsb.org
Thank you,

PPK
It’s has been a great start to our school year. Pre-k has been busy getting to know each other, learning our safety rules, building social skills and exploring our new environment. Some of our fun activities involve name games, social skills with our second step curriculum, painting, and shared reading. Can’t wait to see what this next month brings.
VPK
Kindergarten
1st Grade
Scholars used their superpowers to practice reading independently.
In Math, games are being used to reinforce previous taught skills.
In science, scholars used hand lenses to explore seeing things close up.
2nd Grade
3rd Grade
- Students engaged in a hands-on activity using toothpaste to discover the power of our words. Just like you can’t put toothpaste back in the tube, we can’t take back the words we say to others and ourselves.
- In Science, students designed, built, and tested balloon rockets to show that gravity can be overcome.
- In Reading, we have be learning How to Be Cool in Third Grade from Robbie York. After each chapter, students take time to summarize what they have read using the Somebody Wanted But So Then strategy.
4th Grade
In Reading and Writing we are studying Realistic Fiction and writing Personal Narratives. We are focusing on elements of a story (characters, setting, events, and theme) while reading Save Me a Seat and while crafting our own memorable stories.
In Math we had a great start learning place value structures and strategies. We are now jumping into multiplication facts to 144 and related division facts.
For Science we are diving in Earth in Space and Time.
