How Can We Grow Healthy Kids...Physically?
As the weather turns warmer, many of us consider what we will plant and grow in our gardens and yards. As parents and teachers, we also want to be mindful how we are growing our children so they can experience success in school and in life. Over the course of the next few weeks, I'll discuss ways we grow healthy students and kids. The first area is in their physical health. 1. Consider modeling good eating habits. We know that inputs have huge influence on on outputs. We see this impact in classrooms when kids are hungry or if they've had too much sugar. It is challenging to help our children determine what is "normal" to eat. I'm not sure I thought enough about that when my children were younger. This is an area where it is easy to go to one of two extremes. On one end is the thought that there should only be "ultra-healthy," no sweets, and only organic. On the other end is promoting the idea that dessert is one of the four main food groups. (Guilty as charged.) Our children need to understand that food is fuel for the body and not a way to bring comfort or avoid boredom. We want them to know why we eat what we eat, how much is enough, and how much is too much. A great way to further foster this conversation is by involving them in cooking and preparing meals. 2. Help them find activities that keep them physically active. Children (and adults) need to run and play to keep their bodies and brains in good working condition. Activity gives our kids' brains a break to concentrate better in reading, writing and math in class. Our two children could not have been more different in their activity interests. I hoped that one of them would enjoy running (like me) but no chance of that. Whitney fell in love with volleyball and Joey became a rock climber, kayaker and bike rider. Both of them play lots of pickleball now. The win is seeing them continue to stay active and even try new activities like cross fit training, line dancing and doing outdoor projects. Generally, we are active because we enjoy what we do. Helping our kids try lots of activities can lead to finding the "thing" that helps them stay fit for years to come. (By the way, Dr. Beard and Mrs. Anderson (our PE teachers) do a great job of showing our kids a variety of activities. They are a great resource to contact for ideas of what your child may like to do.) 3. Stop and rest. We all know that kids need at least eight or more hours of sleep a night. The harder lesson as parents is teaching our children when it is time to slow down and put on the brakes. Our culture tells us that "too busy" is a badge of honor. The truth is that maxed out schedules can lead to tired and stressed kids who perform poorly in school. We were made to rest daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly. Physical, mental, and emotional balance is restored when we turn the volume down and stay still for a little while. Rest allows us to "re-create" and recharge. It is so important for the health of our children and for ourselves, too.
As adults, none of us get it all right for being physically healthy. I hope, though, that you might consider taking one small step to model better eating, activity or rest habits for your child so he can be at his best in school. I promise that it will make a lifelong difference for them as well.
Strength and Blessings,
Mr. Maness
