Mandarin Chinese - Zhang Laoshi (Ms. Carroll)
There are so many positive benefits to learning a second language, which are worth reflecting on. While the left side of the brain is primarily responsible for language acquisition, the right side of the brain plays a critical role in helping learners identify the basic sounds associated with language. Like a puzzle, the process involves putting together the different phonic particularities and igniting different parts of the brain to work together. According to numerous studies and research, people who spoke two languages (bilinguals) had more gray matter in the brain (a very good thing) and better short-term memory, problem-solving skills, and attention when compared to those who only spoke one language. Scientific papers show physical increases in certain regions of the brain, especially the hippocampus, which allows there to be greater neuroplasticity/neural pathways for cognitive function.
Mandarin Chinese is spoken by over a billion people around the world, about one fifth of the global population. The benefits of learning Mandarin Chinese extend far beyond language acquisition. By delving into the language, one can gain access to a fascinating world of art, literature, history, and tradition. The ability to communicate with native speakers on a deeper level fosters meaningful connections and cross-cultural understanding. The Chinese traditional cultural values of harmony, benevolence, righteousness, courtesy, wisdom, honesty, loyalty and filial piety are embodied in people’s way of life. Written Chinese is one of the oldest continuously used writing systems dating back over 3000 years. Chinese characters, known as Hanzi (汉字), made up of pictographs and ideographs, form the basis of Chinese writing and differ markedly from the alphabet system used in English and other European derived languages.
Mandarin Chinese has four basic tones and one neutral tone. The tonal nature of the language makes it challenging for English speakers. From the 1st to 3rd grade, all learning occurs within an oral context through songs, poems, tongue twisters, games, activities that involve rhythm, and situational dialogues. The children feel, act, and live every aspect of this in a spontaneous, playful and lively way. Age appropriate stories are told across the grades. Fairy tales for 1st graders, animals and Buddhist fables for 2nd, creation stories for 3rd. Monkey King and the Journey to the West, (the Chinese Exodus story), is the theme for 4th grade. Ancient China is the focus for 5th grade, including the practice of the five animal Qigong system invented by the Medical Sage, Huatuo. In 4th and 5th grade the children learn to write simplified Chinese that is now in use in China.
It’s an honor to share this language and cultural journey with your children.

Spanish - Señora Díez
In middle school Spanish our 7th and 8th graders are diving into a rich unit on Mexico. Together we’re exploring the heart of Mexican culture—its geography, food, and traditions. Through these studies, students are building a true appreciation for this vibrant culture while also strengthening their comprehension and writing skills.
In 8th grade we’re reading "Carlos no quiere ir a Mexico", a fun and easy story that tells of a boy whose family moves to Mexico for a year to teach at a school. Students are able to connect vocabulary to real-life situations, seeing how daily life in Mexico unfolds. This storytelling brings meaning to their language learning and makes it personal, while also giving them confidence in pronunciation and reading ability.
Meanwhile, our 6th graders are focusing on the language of their daily routines, describing their own activities from morning to night. The 8th grade is coming in to help us stay on task and be good role models, and we are so grateful! This grounding in everyday vocabulary helps the 6th graders feel confident expressing themselves in Spanish and nurtures a growing awareness of the world beyond their own.
I'm so proud of them all! Cheers to much more learning,
Señora Díez

Chess Club Update
Hello everyone. Thank you to all the students who showed up on November 8th. It was fun to be back with both the returning students, as well as those new to the group. It also felt good to be getting back into the chess mindset once again. It has me re-inspired and excited to dive in with new material. The children were very focused and seemed to be enjoying being back on the boards as well.
Apologies for anyone who missed the TN on 11/5 that Chess Club has not officially started back up on a weekly basis just yet. That will happen after winter break as there are some scheduling conflicts over the next month. But, we will be meeting this Friday - 11/22. We will also meet Friday, December 13th (I will put out a reminder in the TN before then).
If your child has not come to Chess Club this year and plans to be there this week, please email me at dustin.monda@siskiyouschool.org.
*Remember to pack your child a lunch or an extra snack. Thank you, Dustin Monda
Also, 4 bedroom coming up for sale in a month or so.
