BRMS/CKCS Band Fundraiser
Currently the set of timpani students are playing on are ~40 years old and in disrepair. In the Verona Area School District, we strive toward having all students achieve grade level standards, one thing that students need is equipment that will allow them to achieve those academic goals.
We are raising funds for a set of 4 Ludwig Polished Copper Timpani with Gauges. Not only will these drums be used for daily Badger Ridge and Core Knowledge student learning, but they will be used for Savanna Oaks Middle School band concerts, in addition to community events and concerts like Verona Area Community Theatre who frequent the BRMS PAC and rent our equipment.
Thank you so much for your donation!

Extracurricular Activity Updates
This month’s club recognition goes to our Sewing and Art Makers’ Market Clubs! In these two clubs, students submit an idea of a craft they want to make and sell at the Winter Season Market. Then, the sales of the market will be donated to a charity of their choice.
In VASD, one of our values is student agency. In these clubs, students show agency by establishing and utilizing their ideas and personal voice through the planning, creating, and sharing their creativity through the duration of project completion. Students also have agency in the choice of the charity that means the most to them. Students cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving skills with the design and development of the individual project. Here are some pictures of their work below! Check out even more in the highlights of the month section of the newsletter!

Middle to High School Transition
Time is passing quickly as we approach the halfway point of the 24/25 school year. Our eighth-grade students will soon be preparing for their transition to high school. If you are a parent or guardian of an eighth grader who is your oldest or only child, you may have general questions about the differences between middle school and high school. New terms for high school include: Grade Point Average (GPA), Credits, Block Schedules, Prerequisites, Advanced Placement classes (AP) etc.. If you have questions about high school, you can reach out to a school counselor at BRMS– Ms. Pittman (608) 845-4431 or Mr. Elvis (608) 845-4425. We are happy to help!
High School Course Selection
Today, at 3:30, 8th grade families will receive a separate communication about course selection for your transitioning 8th grade student. The message will come from Badger Ridge, but the contents of the message itself is from Verona Area High School student services. If you did not receive this communication, it is also here for your reference.
AVID
Career Fair
We will be hosting another Career Fair this coming spring. On April 23rd, students from Badger Ridge will be able to hear from many people about their amazing careers, jobs, and experiences. If you are interested in sharing about your career with students, or know someone who would, please note interest through this JotForm. We can only offer this opportunity to students with willing presenters! Thank you!
Selection and Recruitment Update
Every year, we analyze student data to recruit students into the next cohort of Elective students for their 8th grade year. Recruitment for next year’s AVID Elective class will begin in January. Students can elect AVID only by invitation and interview process based on a comprehensive data review of qualifying indicators. AVID is for students with the potential for honors, advanced, Pre-AP®, and AP® work in high school but need support paired with rigor. Students in AVID must maintain an NM or higher in their standards for all of their classes throughout the school year.
Criteria we consider when selecting AVID Elective students include:
1st-generation college student
Strong attendance (90% or higher)
Academic “middle” (regularly Near Mastery or Mastery of Standards)
Average to high test (STAR, Forward) scores
Desire to attend college
From a historically underrepresented group on college campuses (economically disadvantaged, students of color, 1st gen., current or former English language learner)
What the AVID Elective is not...
an “at-risk” system. It is designed to support students who would otherwise not attend and graduate from a four-year college/university.
for students who struggle to complete any of their classwork.
for students who consistently receive grades of “NE” or “BL”.
for students who receive other services to support their learning needs that would make taking the AVID elective difficult (sheltered and/or self-contained classes) or have multiple interventions.
for unmotivated students. They must have individual determination.
Please reach out to Christina Grove (grovec@verona.k12.wi.us), AVID Coordinator, with any questions.
Student Planners
Congratulations to the first round of winners for Planner Prizes!
6th Grade: Rowen S (Planner SuperStar!) and Mrs. Allers and Ms. Carter’s advisory students
7th Grade: Kinley H (Planner SuperStar!) and Ms. Tate and Mr. Robinson’s advisory students (highest average signatures in 7th grade)
8th Grade: Silvia AR and Ms. Parra and Ms. Grove’s advisory students
Looking for ways to talk with your student(s) about their planners? Check out these ideas:
How are you using the planner to help you stay organized and track assignments?
How could you track other activities in your planner (clubs, appointments, family events)?
What goals do you have? How can you set an action plan in your planner?
Ask to see it! Talk to them about what you see (or don’t).
Hiring/Volunteers ✋
We are looking for volunteers to support students and staff in various capacities throughout the school year!
