OLHMS MAKE-A-WISH

What is Make-A-Wish?
Countless volunteers, donors, and advocates work together to bring the Make-A-Wish® mission to life by fulfilling the wishes of children facing critical illnesses. Across the U.S. and its territories, wishes serve as a powerful source of hope, encouraging children to believe in endless possibilities and giving them renewed strength in their fight against illness.
For children coping with severe medical conditions, experiencing their greatest wish can be everything. It can spark a sense of possibility and provide the resilience needed to continue battling their illness. This transformative impact is the driving force behind Make-A-Wish's dedication to making each wish a reality. The inspiration for Make-A-Wish dates back to 1980, when 7-year-old Christopher James Greicius, who was battling leukemia, wished to become a police officer. His Phoenix community came together to fulfill his dream, unknowingly laying the pavement for a movement that would go on to touch millions of lives.
At OLHMS, staff, students, and our Oak Lawn and Hometown communities have come together to grant several wishes.
Make-A-Wish at OLHMS
For 20 years, Oak Lawn Hometown Middle School has proudly partnered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a tradition inspired by former student Brad Pipala. In 2004, Brad lost his battle with cancer, but his wish, a fishing boat that brought his family cherished moments of peace and joy, continues to inspire our efforts. His resilience, strength of character, and positive spirit left a lasting impact on our school community, as did the incredible work of Make-A-Wish.
Thanks to our students' dedication, we have granted over 90 wishes and raised more than $570,000—an extraordinary achievement made by children for children. This milestone is a testament to the power of belief and compassion.
This Year’s Fundraising Success 🎉
Thanks to the dedication of our students, staff, and community, this year’s Make-A-Wish campaign has been a huge success thus far!
On Friday, February 7th, OLHMS hosted an exciting charity volleyball tournament to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The event brought together OLHMS students, staff, the Oak Lawn Police Department, and the Oak Lawn Fire Department for a night of friendly competition—all in the spirit of giving.
With over 300 enthusiastic attendees, the tournament was an enormous success, raising more than $11,947, and still growing! The funds will help sponsor a child in the area granting them a life-changing wish and bringing joy to their family.
Players and spectators enjoyed the game, showcasing teamwork and community spirit. Aine shared, "It was really fun to be part of the Make-A-Wish game, and it was even more meaningful knowing we were playing for such a great cause."
Our fundraising is not over! Please consider donating by clicking on the "OLHMS Make-A-Wish Donation Page" link below to help OLHMS reach their goal!
