Lanakila Baptist High School - August 2020
Distance Learning
Aloha LBHS Ohana!
Praying you are doing well and staying healthy and safe! As much as we had hoped it wouldn't come to this, we are, again, faced with the "Stay-at-Home, Work-From-Home" order. In light of this new mandate, we will switch to full distance learning starting this Thursday, August 27th.
Of course, we're disappointed that we will not be able to meet with students on campus for now, but our number one concern is the health and well-being of our students and staff. And, although we've only just begun, we are glad for the time we've had to get them ready for the new school year.
Below you will find expectations for everyone involved in the education of students. Please read this through as we want to ensure you get every bit of information we are able to give at this time.
Online Classes Begin Thursday, August 27th
What you can expect from our teachers:
Our teachers are working hard so that students will receive the same level of education at home as they would in the classroom setting. To continue providing a quality education, teachers will:
Outline a learning plan via Google classroom with clear deadlines, instructions, supplemental information, and expectations.
Instruct live via Zoom during the specified class schedule. (see below for schedule)
Be available by appointment for additional assistance via phone and/or ZOOM from 2:00-3:00 pm.
Post grades within 48 hours after the due date. (Essays may take longer)
Stay available to students & parents for conferencing as needed.
What is expected of parents:
In order for students to receive quality instruction and education, parents must provide an optimal learning environment and atmosphere.
Be sure to have internet available with a functioning Chromebook or alternative computer resource.
Designate a study-space for your child in an appropriate learning environment (not in their rooms on their beds) that is free from distractions (e.g. talking family members, siblings, phones, gaming consoles, iPads, other computers, etc.)
Check-in at the beginning of each day and ask questions about what goals your child will accomplish for that day. Students may benefit from an assignment board or list to help them stay productive.
Follow up at the end of each day to check on what skills or content was worked on and the progress of the goals your child has set.
Log in to Chalkable regularly to ensure your child is completing the assignments due and turning them in.
Be sure your child gets adequate rest to ensure they are fully able to engage during their shortened class periods.
What is expected of students:
Although this may feel like a break from school, it’s imperative that students take distance learning seriously in order to fully gain the knowledge needed to promote to the next grade.
Students must get ready for school. Although you will be at home, it’s important to stick with routines and maintain good hygiene. Brush your teeth/hair, put on your school uniform, eat breakfast, and be ready to start your first class at 8:00 am.
Students must be present and on-time to each class for attendance. You will be graded, so if you walk away from your computer or are not paying attention, you may miss critical information and lose credit for participation. Non-attendance will result in a loss of grade.
Students must participate in all classes during the specified class time.
Students must complete and turn in all assignments by the due date in the specified way (via sharing docs, uploading to Google Classroom, etc.)

Wednesday Classes
Elective classes will run for one hour, however, depending on the class, students may be released from the ZOOM meeting earlier to complete projects or assignments.
We understand that some things may look different because of the lack of actual partnership and group connection, but appropriate work will be given in order to fulfill course requirements and acquire credits toward graduation.
Physical Education
7th through 9th-graders are required to take P.E, so to ensure these students meet requirements for the class, they must maintain a level of physical activity each week in order to receive course credit. Most students have received a copy, but for those not on campus, please print the "Distance Learning - PE" PDF below for students to use to log activities and duration. In order to receive credit, students must complete 30 minutes of exercise or physical activity 5 times per week, have a parent sign the sheet at the end of each week, and upload a picture or scanned copy of the sheet to the PE Google Classroom.
Please be sure your child checks Google Classroom regularly as Mr. Buttler may have other activities for students to do.
