D11 Preschool Connection
Updates and Information for Our Community of Families
December 2024
What's Happening in Preschool?
A few times a year, our teachers love having the opportunity to build in a few weeks to delve deeply into a topic that targets fun student interests! For the last two weeks of December, your teacher will be moving off of the planned curriculum and onto a teacher-selected theme. During these teacher-themed weeks, students continue to follow the regular routine, and academic concepts continue to be taught daily, imbedded in a fun theme! Regular curriculum themes will resume after the winter break.
Curriculum Highlight: Math
Preschool-age children are naturally curious about math concepts! They want to build, sort, count and measure. Our preschool classrooms provide young children with materials to explore math concepts during play, and teachers provide direct math instruction using the curriculum Developing Math Concepts in Pre-Kindergarten. This curriculum focuses on teaching number concepts, geometry, and patterns through hands-on manipulation and play.
Early math concepts taught in our preschool classrooms include:
- counting objects by giving each object one number
- understanding the concept of "how many there are" when we count a group of objects
- introducing written numbers and the quantities of each number
- identifying and labeling shapes, and describing features of shapes
- creating and describing patterns
