A Note from the Principal
NHMS Families,
The first month is in the books! I'm excited to share that our students have successfully transitioned from summer mode to school mode. With the first set of grades/ progress reports on October 4, 2024 posted to the Home Access Center, now is a great time to review your child's performance. If you have any concerns, I encourage you to reach out to your child's teacher directly.
This is the time when we start to see the impact of our students' study habits. If your child is struggling, it may be helpful to evaluate their afternoon routine. Ensuring homework is done in a distraction-free environment can make a long-term difference in their success.
On behalf of the teachers, I also want to thank you for helping us maintain a distraction-free school environment. Teachers have noted that students are more engaged in their learning because they are not distracted by cell phones. We appreciate your continued support in ensuring that students keep their devices off and stored in their lockers during the school day. If you ever need to communicate with your child during school hours, please feel free to contact our main office, and we will happily pass the message along.
We also have some exciting events coming up this month. On Thursday, October 10, 2024, students will participate in a presentation on Internet Safety. Additionally, Hawks SOAR Day, a student-designed event for students, will take place on October 17, 2024.
Finally, I encourage you to explore magnet program options by attending the upcoming open houses. Applications will open October 14th and close December 5th at 11:59pm.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support!

Importance of being in School
We want to instill good habits while students are in the middle school that will transfer to success at the high school and beyond. So, all students and parents are asked to keep track of their school attendance and are reminded that a total of 18 days absence and greater for a school year is considered chronic absenteeism and could have negative effects on academics and eligibility.
Whether excused or unexcused, a total of 18 days absence and greater for a school year can/will affect the ability to have dual enrollment classes paid for and internship/apprenticeship opportunities.
Questions on attendance? Please reach out to NHMS administration. Sending in an absence note feel free to email. Megan.Johnson@hcps.org
