Bringing Icons to Life through "Histogram'"
The 6th-grade team innovatively celebrated and paid tribute to Black History Month by integrating a bulletin board with social media. Utilizing a resource called "Histogram," they showcased notable figures as if they were featured on Instagram. This approach effectively captivated students' interest, prompting them to pause and delve into the lives of these individuals, discovering new insights about familiar faces or encountering new historical figures.
Musical Theatre Learns the Legacy of the Jackson Rooming House
A troupe of students engaged in the musical "Once on This Island" were granted the opportunity to attend a performance by Sankofa and Gamut Theater Group, The Jackson Rooming House: Music’s Resting Place, by Sharia Benn & Clark Nicholson. This production unfolds within the historical confines of the Jackson Rooming House, operational from the 1920s to the 1970s in Harrisburg, PA. It delves into the lives of pioneering musicians who reshaped the industry, while spotlighting one of the pivotal houses within the Harrisburg Hospitality network, which hosted numerous illustrious African American artists. Among these luminaries were Ma Rainey, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and Muddy Waters, among others. Audience members embarked on a journey spanning decades, gaining insight into the influential figures who lodged at the Jackson Rooming House and others associated with The Green Book, a vital resource offering Black performers safe accommodations during the era of segregation. Notably, the performance also featured Brian McGrady, an alumnus of Steel-High (Class of 2006).

Students Explore Opportunities at HBCU Fair
On February 15th, Mrs. Warner and Mrs. Jones accompanied students to the Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) Fair organized by Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region (BBBSCR) and the Zeta Theta Lambda chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. at WITF studios in Harrisburg. Representatives from various colleges and universities engaged with students, discussing their programs, educational pathways, and opportunities for financial assistance.
2nd Grade Students Honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Ms. Marlak's 2nd grade class made a collage of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Each student had to color a piece of the collage and write what their dream is, similar to Dr. King's famous speech. Their collage reinforced the idea that, even though we are all unique, when we come together, our differences create something amazing and beautiful!
Tips for Little Learners from Mrs. Merlo, Occupational Therapist
Ways to celebrate Leap Year 2024! What will you do with a whole extra day?
- Practice leaping or jumping like a frog. Pair this with practicing spelling words, identifying letters, reading sight words, or practicing multiplication facts!
- How many animals leap when they move? Can you name some and move like them? Look through books and magazines how many animals can you find?
- Have an “L Hunt” – Look around your home. Find objects that start with the letter ‘L’. Write what you find or use the words in a sentence.
- If you have those little plastic jumping frogs, this is the perfect time to pull them out. Work on finger isolation skills aiming for a target.
- Look up a video or information on Leap Year. What facts can you learn? Try making an origami frog. It only comes every 4 years so enjoy!
January Elementary PRIDE Club Celebration!
In January, we celebrated PRIDE Club students from every grade level who consistently showed exceptional PRIDE during marking period 2. These students came together in the cafeteria to enjoy a morning of Cocoa and Cookies. They enjoyed some hot cocoa, decorated and ate cookies, mingled with administration and teachers, and even spent some time showing off their limbo skills. Our next PRIDE Club celebration will be in April to celebrate our PRIDE Club Students for Marking Period 3.
