Dear 7th and 8th Grade Parents
As we move through the school year and quickly approach the end of the first quarter, staying on top of grades is essential for academic success and personal growth.
Here are some effective strategies to help students maintain and improve grades. Have conversations with your students on the following topics:
Maintaining Academic Success
Know the Grades: Have your student become familiar with how each assignment, test, and project contributes to their overall grade.
Check Grading Policies: Understand the weight of different assignments (homework, quizzes, tests) to prioritize efforts.
Regularly Check on Progress
Use Online Platforms: Have your student log into Schoology and Powerschool weekly to track progress. Make it a weekly habit!
Communication with Teachers: Have your student ask for updates on performance and any missing assignments.
Create a Study Routine
Set Study Goals: Aim to improve grades in specific subjects. Break down goals into manageable tasks.
Establish a Consistent Schedule: Allocate time each day for studying and completing assignments. Consistency helps reinforce learning.
See counselor if help is needed with time management.
Stay Engaged in Class
Participate Actively: Ask questions in class and engage in discussions to deepen understanding of the material.
Take Effective Notes: Develop a note-taking method that works, whether it's outlines or bullet points, write down key points during class discussions.
Contribute to Groups: Be involved in group work to share ideas and learn from classmates.
Ask for Help When Needed
Utilize School Resources: Take advantage of academic success and set up times to meet with teachers for extra help during period 8 or after school.
Form Study Groups: Collaborating with classmates can make studying more enjoyable and effective.
Prioritize Assignments
Use a Planner: In addition to checking Schoology, write down all assignments and due dates. Keep track of assignments, tests, and important dates. Write down homework every day! This helps to stay organized and prevents last-minute rushes.
Break Tasks into Smaller Steps: Large projects can be overwhelming. Divide them into smaller, manageable tasks to stay on track.
Manage Test Preparation
Start Early: Begin studying for tests well in advance. This reduces stress and enhances retention.
Practice with Old Tests: If available, review previous quizzes or tests to become familiar with the format and types of questions.
Use Study Techniques: Try methods like summarizing information, making flashcards, or teaching someone else the material.
Reflect on Performance
Analyze Grades: After receiving grades, take time to reflect on what went well and what can be improved.
Learn from Mistakes: If grades are lower than expected, identify what went wrong and how to avoid similar issues in the future.
If you have any questions or need additional support, please reach out to the counseling staff. Together, we can achieve academic success!
