What is the MYP?
The Middle Year Program (MYP) is an educational program which spans sixth to tenth grade. The Middle Years Program was developed as a part of the International Baccalaureate Programme (IB) in 1994. The Middle Years program is not a curriculum with set lessons to be taught but rather an educational approach which focuses on varied hands-on experiences, inquiry, and whole-child view of learning.

Who is an MYP Student?
Eevery! The MYP programme extends to all Royal Oak Students from 6-10 grade. Students who wish to continue in the IB programme may choose to pursue the Diploma Program in 11-12th grade.

Six Grade Course Descriptions
Royal Middle School blends Michigan educational state standards with the unique teaching approach of the Middle Years Program. Students are encouraged to apply the International Baccalaureate learner profile traits to rigorous coursework. The Middle Years Programme encourages students to be well-rounded through a challenging broad curriculum which pushes pupils to explore their world through a broad subject area curriculum for example:
Science:
Student scientists explore environmental sustainability through all three grade levels. Students learn to inquire like scientists and apply solutions to real world problems. In sixth grade, students model systems of water sustainability to the nutritional needs of the human body. Progressing to 7th students study earth’s dynamic surface and the challenges of energy generation. Science culminates in 8th grade as students use advanced scientific thinking to design experiments simulating the challenges of climate and the mysteries of our universe.
Design:
Royal Middle School offers a design curriculum which blends the creative with a 21st century digital skill set. Through a diverse set of projects students have the opportunity to explore programs like photo editing and animation. Inquiry and real world solutions are a throughline of design classes across all three years.
Language Acquisition:
As an international baccalaureate school, Royal Oak Middle School is proud to offer a robust set of language courses that works to develop bilingualism in all of our students. Beginning in 6th grade students explore global cultures of the Spanish,French, and German speaking world through language before choosing a language to study in 7th and 8th grade.
Arts:
Royal Oak Middle school has a mission to provide well rounded individuals;as a part of this mission and IB’s emphasis on a broad curriculum all Royal Oak Middle School students take part in the arts. Students select visual arts, band, choir, or orchestra courses. Through these courses students can grow their talents and begin to see themselves as artists.
Math:
Students work collaboratively to develop mathematical skills in basic math, algebra, and geometry. Students work to use math to problem solve in challenging and unfamiliar situations.
Individuals in Societies:
Individuals in Societies encourages students to see themselves as members of the global community. Students study history and current events side by side, taking part in historical inquiry. Individuals in Societies students wrestle with difficult questions like “ How can we help refugees?”, “What made early humans"human "?” and “How did the revolutionary war represent a change in thinking?”
PHE
The Middle Years Programme acknowledges the importance of a strong mind-body connection.Students build collaboration skills and resilience in their Physical Health and Education courses. PHE goes beyond team sports to help students develop positive relationships with themselves and others through health courses.
Language and Literature
Royal Oak Students explore classical works of literature alongside modern writing about that it means to be an adolescent in the 21st century. Through a diversity of writing formats students grapple with the personal and cultural expression of language.
Academic Support
Academic support classes are designed to provide additional assistance to students who may need extra help with their studies. These classes focus on reinforcing key concepts, improving study skills, and offering personalized attention to ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed.
Introduction to MYP
This is Royal Oak's newest elective. Students spend a quarter learning about our 10 Learner Profile traits: knowledgeable, principled, balanced, communicator, risk taker, reflective, inquirer, open minded, thinker and caring. Student complete projects which encourage them to explore and develop these traits in their academic and personal lives.
