Notes from Dr. Raeder
Welcome to May. We are excited about finishing the year strong. We are proud of the work of our students during this school year. There is no rule book written on how to be a successful high school student, yet the students of LHS accomplished this goal. This is a time to honor the work of the school year and especially the efforts of our graduates.
The Lincoln high school graduation ceremonies will be held Sunday, May 19th at the Sioux Falls Arena at 11:00 AM. Our graduation ceremony will be live-streamed so friends and family not in attendance also have an opportunity to celebrate with their graduates. At the arena, it is suggested that visitors refrain from bringing bags with them as bags are searched and metal detectors are used. Best of luck to all the graduates as they tackle their next adventure. Go Pats!
Due to snow days, our last day of school has changed. Finals will be on May 22nd and May 23rd. The schedule for Semester Tests is below. We will have open lunch each day and Chromebooks will be collected after the final exam. This is a change from last semester.
The Day of Graduation
To help the graduation ceremony be a happy and dignified experience, Lincoln High School would like to inform you of certain guidelines for graduation.
Students must be at the Sioux Falls Arena by 10:15 AM on Sunday, May 19. Families cannot arrive before 10 AM. Graduation will start promptly at 11:00 AM. Family and friends may take their seats starting at 10:00 AM. You should be aware the Arena has a clear bag policy. Metal detectors will be in use and bags will be searched. Please limit the items you take into the Arena.
All graduation ceremonies will be live streamed so other family members also have an opportunity to celebrate with their graduate. Here is Lincoln High School’s graduation live stream link: https://www.youtube.com/live/_AwusRDmKD4?feature=share.
The graduation ceremony will also be played on KLRN at 7 AM and 7 PM, Monday May 27th and on Friday May 31st. There will be no photographer.
We are asking students to dress in attire that is appropriate for a more formal celebration. Jeans, bare feet, flip flop sandals or tennis shoes are not acceptable. Mortarboards should be worn flat on a graduate’s head and may not be decorated. Native American students may attach an eagle feather or plume and medicine wheel to their caps. Native American students may also wear a preapproved beaded cap; the beaded design must be approved by Monday, May 13th by the Office of Indian Education.
Please inform your son or daughter that air horns, plastic balls, or other items of distraction will be confiscated. It is unfair to students when names cannot be heard because of distractions.
The recessional is the closing of the graduation ceremony. Seniors will move their tassels from left to right upon receiving their diplomas. Immediately after being presented, seniors will recess through the front of the Arena and proceed to the back, where you may meet with your graduate. To facilitate this process, we ask that you do not leave your seats until all the seniors have had an opportunity to recess out.
Graduation practice will be Friday, May 3rd, during Ad-room (10:05-10:40 AM). Student diplomas will be available for pickup in the Lincoln High School office starting on June 10th. Please be sure all school-related fees have been paid prior to May 1.

May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month
The National Association for Hearing and Speech Action (NAHSA) announced today that starting in 2024, May will be recognized as National Speech-Language-Hearing Month instead of Better Hearing and Speech Month, which NAHSA—the consumer affiliate of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)—initiated in 1972, the year I was born 😊
“We’re excited about refreshing the name of a very important observance month,” said Vicki R. Deal-Williams, MA, CCC-SLP, ASHA’s Chief Executive Officer. “Today’s realities are much different from what they were more than 50 years ago, when NAHSA launched Better Hearing and Speech Month. We see the new name as an appropriate and needed step forward.”
The decision to change the name was not made lightly, Deal-Williams noted. “For more than a year, renaming possibilities and viewpoints from thousands of ASHA member audiologists and speech-language pathologists were solicited and considered. We now have a new name that aligns with their feedback—as well as with the name of its “parent” organization, ASHA.
What won’t change is the focus and effort that goes into making May a month of educating the public about the importance of human communication and what we can all do to prevent and address communication disorders. Spreading that message is particularly critical now, as more children are manifesting communication delays and disorders because of too much time with electronics at younger and younger ages, not enough time talking face to face and interacting with other people, hearing loss from loud noise exposure, and the aging U.S. population is expected to experience communication challenges.
Mrs. Holiday encourages students to learn new words and keep their brain active every day to improve their vocabulary. “Get a Word-A-Day app for your phone. That is a quick and easy way to learn new vocabulary words in our busy world. Word searches and crossword puzzles are also great to do in your down time as well as reading out loud, even if it is a short magazine article or a chapter in a good book. The best advice I have is to put down your phone and actually talk to someone throughout your day. Some students are lacking in social skills because with social media, you don’t always have to interact in person. Unless you practice those skills in real time, you aren’t going to get better at them. It may be the difference between landing that summer job or losing out because you couldn’t answer questions in an interview”.
