Surfside Shark Bites
Week of October 14-18, 2024
A Note From Principal Frandsen
Good afternoon, Surfside families!
Soccer season has only a few more games left and our team is doing a great job with a nail biter loss yesterday (0-1). We look forward to finals in a couple of weeks. Basketball season is about to launch. If your student is in high school and interested in joining our basketball team, please speak with Mr. Vivian. We had a great team and lots of fun last year.
The weather is changing and the holidays are right around the corner. Many students are doing an excellent job keeping their attendance up and getting their work done. Parents, please check Aeries and/or your students' teacher(s) to check on progress so adjustments can be made before it's too late to make course corrections.
Finally, our modernization process continues to proceed as planned with noticeable progress taking place each week. Again, the estimated completion date is the summer of 2026. Please take a look at the construction update in this edition of Shark Bites.
Have a great weekend,
Principal Frandsen
Weekly Construction Update
Construction update: We are thrilled that Surfside is undergoing a $35.5 million modernization. Our campus will be transformed into a state-of-the-art learning facility that will enhance the academic experience for students. Our community is incredibly deserving of this exciting opportunity. You will not be able to recognize Surfside when we are done. Getting there will be a process. There will be a time when our school does not look pretty. This is expected and part of transforming our campus into something spectacular. Please know that as your principal, I am here to guide you through every step. If you have any questions, please let me know.
Here are some frequently asked questions you may have:
How long will construction take?
The modernization of Surfside is expected to be completed by August 2026. It is essential to know that this timeline could fluctuate, a normal part of this process. Due to the age of our campus, we may uncover additional work that needs to be done. Completing this work does not mean we are behind schedule. It must be done before we can complete the project. Crews may need to pause some aspects of the project if we experience heavy rain. This is also something that we need to keep in mind.
Is this safe?
Yes, the safety of our students and staff is our top priority. Rest assured, they do not have access to construction areas. The work is happening in enclosed areas with adult supervision. We have multiple layers of oversight for this construction project. All of the work we are doing must be approved by the state agency in charge of construction on TK-12 schools, known as the Division of State Architect (DSA). The DSA has assigned an inspector to this project who is on campus to approve the work that is being done. The construction company has also a designated member of their team who monitors the campus daily for safety.
I understand the importance of keeping you informed about the progress we've made. I will continue to update you weekly on the latest developments of our modernization project. Your understanding and support are greatly appreciated.

K-5 Updates
Shark Nibbles…K-5th Updates
Dear Families,
Reading is an essential piece of learning. Some students are “learning to read”, but the excitement comes when they make the transition to “reading to learn”. Providing students an uninterrupted time daily will establish a habit and love for reading. I love to read now, but that wasn’t always the case. It started with setting a goal and continual practice. I love to watch students read their books and share their new information with me. What will your next book be?
Math Challenge:
Math Facts: How are you doing with your addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division math facts? Grade K-2 should learn to add and subtract quickly, Grade 3 should continue to add and subtract as well as multiply, and Grades 4-5 should incorporate division. This skill will help them the rest of their lives and I find students who know their math facts quickly enjoy math.
Important Dates:
October 21-Nov 1: Grades 3-5 District Interim CAASPP Assessment
Monday, October 21 9:30am-11:30am (Language Arts)
Friday, October 25 9:30am-11:30am (Math)
Middle School News
Middle School…
Thank you for another amazing week!
In-Person students have been enjoying taking a short break midday and using our newly installed basketball court. It is fun to watch the students taking advantage of this opportunity to socialize and burn off some energy! We appreciate this addition to our campus to help us get through the very exciting renovation process in the works.
Interim CAASPP Testing-
The week of October 21st 6th - 8th graders will be taking the CAASPP Interim Tests in both ELA & Math. These are district mandated progress markers. These are proctored tests that can only be taken on District devices. Students who attend in-person sessions will complete them at school.
The ELA Interim will take place on Monday, October 21. The Math Interim will take place on Friday, October 26. The sessions will begin at 9:30 - 11:30. Virtual students will have opportunities to join sessions from home.
Please check your email for specific test directions.
Work Samples and P.E. logs were due Friday, October 11. Work samples submitted should reflect a high caliber of work. A great way to submit samples digitally is to use the Genius Scan App! The next work due date is November 11, 2024.

New District Cell Phone Policy
"During the Day, Off and Away"
To create a focused learning environment and support student mental health, Oceanside Unified School District will now require all student cell phones to be off and stowed in backpacks upon entering campus and remain off until leaving. Exceptions are made for students with IEPs or 504 plans if specified for medical or anxiety-related needs, as determined by site administration. Classrooms have landlines for students to contact parents if needed, and students will have access to their phones during emergencies. The policy aims to reduce distractions, enhance engagement, and prevent cyberbullying, while also reducing the risk of phone theft or loss. Support and disciplinary actions for policy violations could include warnings, phone calls home, and phone confiscations, with increasing consequences for repeated offenses. OUSD is committed to student safety and mental health, fostering academic and emotional growth. For more details, refer to OUSD's Handbook.
