March 2025

HJH is looking to wrap up an amazing school year...
It is amazing to think that we are almost at the end of the school year. We appreciate the support and enthusiasm you have shown over the past ten months. HJH couldn't have asked for a better year as a campus!
National Teacher Appreciation Week will take place next week. Our teachers have done an outstanding job challenging our students academically this year in the classrooms. They've developed relationships with our students and have made memories that will last a lifetime. Several of them could be seen amongst the fans cheering them on at their extra-curricular events. A simple way to express your appreciation is letting them know by email, note or even speaking to them in person. We are very proud of the hard work our teachers have shown this year. They have poured their hearts and souls into their classrooms, and for that we are truly thankful.
As we come to the end of this school year, I would like to reiterate the crucial role that parents play in their students' success. The education of your student relies heavily on your support and partnership with us. Throughout the past year, our students have shown growth and we are looking forward to a successful year-end. Please continue to support your child these next few weeks as we prepare them for a smooth finish. Please take a moment to look at this month's events and all the great things happening on our campus. Go Cats!

TSI Testing - 8th Graders
All freshmen enrolled in the Associate Degree Pathway are required to take the TSIA. A Google Form was shared during and after the Dual Credit Meeting for students to select a testing date. Testing will take place at the Training Facility located behind the Hallsville ISD Administration Building. Students will need $10 in exact change to test. The flyer with the stoplight graphic outlines the scoring process for your student. If they score in the green or yellow zones, they will be eligible to take dual credit courses as a freshman. However, students who score in the yellow zone will need to retake the TSIA next year and achieve a green score to continue dual credit courses beyond their freshman year. Students scoring in the red zone are not eligible for dual credit this year but may retake the test in the future. Any student scoring in the red zone will be contacted by a high school counselor to change the dual credit courses listed their freshmen year. Students will need to be picked up from the training center once they are finished with their test.

2025 Summer School
We are preparing to continue to grow students and strengthen skills this summer at Hallsville Junior High. Be on the lookout for invitations to attend. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Nicole Williams at nwilliams@hisd.com
Leader in Me
Attendance Matters!
The school day starts at 7:50am and ends at 3:35pm. At 7:45am, students will be released from the gym to their classrooms, and morning announcements will start at 7:50am. Attendance is taken every period at the Jr. High. Any student arriving late or leaving early will be marked absent for the periods that he/she misses. All absences, full or partial day, require documentation to be excused. If a student misses more than 20 minutes of a class without valid documentation, the student will be considered absent for this purpose.
When a student is absent and returns to school, he/she MUST bring a note signed by the parent explaining the reason for the absence or a note from a doctor. Any absence of more than 5 consecutive days for illness will require a statement from a doctor verifying the illness. Parent notes must be turned in within 3 days of the absence.
*Any documentation needing to be turned in can be done so through the reception desk, attendance office, or emailed directly to Mrs. Dorsey at bdorsey@hisd.com.
Parent Notes
Parent notes must be turned in within 3 days of the absence. Per our handbook, early pick-ups are unexcused unless our nurse sends your student home or we receive documentation from a doctor's office for that date. Any documentation needing to be turned in can be done so through the reception desk or attendance office, or emailed directly to Mrs. Dorsey at bdorsey@hisd.com.
Saturday School/Credit Recovery
Texas Education Agency states that a student must attend a class 90% of the time it is offered to earn credit for that class. Students with less than 90% attendance will not earn credit and cannot be promoted to the next grade level. Both excused and unexcused absences count toward time missed in a class. The state will allow us to place a student in the next grade level if that student has completed a principal approved plan to recover attendance. You will be notified if your student falls below 90% attendance and requires credit recovery. Credit recovery classes began Saturday, February 22nd and will continue into April.
Tutorials
If your child is needs extra support in a classroom we have opportunities for them to receive assistance outside the school day. Teachers are available before and after school for tutorials. Even if the day you can bring your child early or pick them up late doesn't match with their teacher's tutorial schedule, someone in that department can help. Please contact your teacher if you feel your child needs the extra support to be successful this school year.
HJH College Day
Every 2nd Thursday of the month, students and staff are encouraged to wear college shirts to endorse education beyond high school. This month will be Thursday, April 10th. On this day, we can come together regardless of our college mascot and cheer on our students as they begin to prepare for their future.
School Safety Drills
In an effort to practice our safety protocols, HJH will regularly perform safety drills to ensure our students and staff know how to respond in a crisis situation. Safety is our number one priority and we will continue to practice all state mandated drills throughout the school year so that our students and staff are prepared. In the event of an actual emergency, HJH will communicate to our families in a timely manner to keep you informed.
*In May, we will conduct a reverse lockdown drill. During this drill, students and staff will evacuate the building, then immediately re-enter and secure the building by going into lockdown.
8th Grade Dance
The Class of 2029 8th Grade Dance, “Let’s Glow,” will be held on Saturday, May 10th @ The Reserve. The dance is only offered to current HJH 8th grade students, and the signed parent waiver is the students’ admission into the dance. Any student with a current DAEP suspension placement on the day of the dance will not be permitted to attend. The dance will be drop-off and pick-up only. Only approved volunteers/chaperones are allowed in the dance. Dance pictures will be shared with all 8th grade parents via Skyward. We look forward to a fun evening!

Month of May
“The world’s favorite season is Spring. All things seem possible in May.”
–Edwin Way Teale (American Naturalist and Photographer)
Mental Awareness Month
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health is our feelings, our thinking, our emotions, and our moods. Feeling down, angry, and stressed is a normal part of life. Just like it’s normal to feel happy, confident, and carefree. We all have positive and negative emotions that come and go based on what’s happening around us. These are everyday feelings. Good mental health is about experiencing emotions and knowing how to process those feelings in healthy ways. There are many ways to process our feelings such as talking to someone we trust or taking a break and doing something we enjoy. For example, listening to music, playing a sport, drawing, reading, journaling, etc.
If you or someone you know are struggling with mental health issues, please contact a trusted adult.

Nurse Monthly Newsletter–May 2025
Parents, as we look forward to the next school year, please take a moment to make those important summer appointments with your child’s physician. Immunizations must be up to date by the first day of school or the child will not be allowed to attend classes. This is true for all grade levels and is state mandated.
Proof of vaccination can be uploaded to Skyward during online registration, faxed or emailed to your campus nurse any time over the summer.
A special walk-in vaccination clinic will be available to Hallsville students:
July 30, 2025 from 1pm-5pm
August 14, 2025 from 8am-Noon
Visit Aurora Concepts Link for more information.
Students with vaccination waivers must have current paperwork (or proof of vaccination) on file with the campus nurse. These usually expire every two years and do not have a grace period. Waivers must be in date or the student is considered out of compliance and cannot attend classes.
Please know that doctor notes and care plans are only good for the current school year and must be updated every August. This includes restroom and PE notes, along with diabetic, seizure and asthma care plans.
Medications: If your student has medications in the nurse office, please make arrangements to pick them up by the last day of school. Any medications that are not checked out by a parent cannot be left in the nurse office and will be thrown away. *Doctor notes for medications must be renewed each school year.
May is a busy month with many off-campus events. Any time your student has an off-campus event during school hours and you have a medical need or concern, please reach out to me so that we can make a plan ahead of time.
Always reach out with any questions or concerns.

Restroom Policy
Tardy Policy
Instructional time is essential to student success. Additionally, it is critical that students learn the importance of punctuality. In order to encourage this behavior, HJH has implemented the following campus policy regarding tardies:
Tardies will be tracked cumulatively each 9 week grading period, with the following consequences in place for repeated tardies:
5th tardy - 1 day of Lunch Detention
10th tardy - 1 day of After School Detention
15th tardy - 1 day of ISS
20+ - Discretion of Campus Administration
Please discuss with your child the importance of punctuality as we are preparing students to be responsible with their time.
Bullying/Harassment
Bullying:
is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Both kids who are bullied and who bully others may have serious, lasting problems. Bullying can threaten students’ physical and emotional safety at school and can negatively impact their ability to learn.
In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include:
An Imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their power—such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity—to control or harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people.
Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once.
Bullying could include actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.
Harassment:
means threatening to cause harm or bodily injury to another student, engaging in sexually intimidating conduct, causing physical damage to the property of another student, subjecting another student to physical confinement or restraint, or maliciously taking any action that substantially harms another student's physical or emotional health or safety.

House Bill 114 (HB 114)
Parents and Guardians,
We are reaching out to bring your attention to an important new policy change that has been passed by the 88th Texas Legislature and will be taking effect immediately in our district.
House Bill 114 (HB 114) has been enacted to respond to the increasing concerns around e-cigarettes, vaping, marijuana, and THC related products amongst our youth. The Bill mandates that any student found in possession of, under the influence of, selling, gifting, or delivering these substances within a 300-feet radius of any school premises, will be immediately removed and placed in a Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP).
You can access the full version of the Bill here: https://capitol.texas.gov/tlodocs/88R/billtext/pdf/HB00114F.pdf
Please take a moment to discuss the implications of this new law with your children, emphasizing the importance of adhering to school policies and laws for their own welfare and for the betterment of the school community as a whole.
Thank you,
HISD Administration
