Parenting Corner (Walk/Bike to School Resumes)
As a reminder for families living in the Belmont neighborhood: starting after spring break (on April 8), we are planning on resuming our safe route to school program in which Deputy Custer (Our School’s Resource Officer) will be stationed at that intersection on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (rain or shine) from 7:55-8:10am to help students cross Route 33 safely. We are planning to continue this pilot until the last day of school on June 4.

Principal's Super Science Stuff
March Week 4 - Body Systems: Create a Lung Model!
Observation: When I breathe in, my belly gets big. When I breathe out, it gets smaller.
Question: Why does my belly get bigger and smaller?
Materials:
1 empty 1 (or 2) liter bottle
3 balloons
Duct tape
2 straws
Small Lump of Clay
Investigation:
Cut off the bottle of a clear plastic bottle (you need an adult for that).
Tape each balloon end around a straw.
Insert the straws through the opening of the 2 liter bottle and secure them with the clay. Make sure there are no holes for air to come through.
Cut the bottom off the 3rd balloon and wrap (and duct tape) the cut end around the bottom of the bottle. (You may need to line the bottom of the plastic bottle with duct tape BEFORE doing this step so you don’t pierce or break the balloon as you’re trying to attach it.)
When you pull down on the bottom balloon, what happens to the balloons inside the bottle?
Results:
Take a picture of your experiment and submit it to your teacher on SeeSaw!
Reflection:
Research: What part of your body might be symbolized by the balloon at the bottom of the bottle?
