Notes from the Nurse
Dear Families,
HSE Schools welcome the Smiles Program/Mobile Dentists to provide a free exam and cleaning to your student while they are in school. We understand many families do not have dental insurance and cannot afford the costs out of pocket, so we hope this will provide the dental care your student needs.
Mobile Dentists accepts dental insurance as well, so please provide that information if you’d like to register your student(s).
Harrison Parkway Elementary is hosting the Mobile Dentists on May 13th & 14th
To register your student(s), please complete a form by using one of the following methods:
- Go to: www.myschooldentist.com, find your school in the listing and complete the form
- Scan the QR code below to take you to the website
- Pick up a permission form and send in with your student or scan and email to your building nurse Jenny at jleonard@hse.k12.in.us
- Copies are also available at the school front desk. You are welcome to stop by or your student can pick up a copy
Please complete all information on the form. If information is missing, you may be asked to complete another form. You may submit the form by Monday, April 22nd to ensure Mobile Dentists have time to process the forms prior to the appointment date.
If you have any further questions, feel free to go to the website: myschooldentist.com or contact Jenny Leonard.
HSE Safety & Wellness Expo
Counselor's Corner
Hi HPE Families!
I hope you are doing well! I wanted to give you a few tips on how you can incorporate social emotional learning into your home.
- Be specific when giving praise. Process praise specifically on the positive behavior/skill you are noticing rather than giving person/achievement-specific praise.
- Playing Simon Says is a great game to encourage body awareness and promote self-regulation.
- Talk about your own challenges and mistakes. This helps model for children how to learn from making mistakes.
As we approach the end of the year, do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
Have a great weekend!
Mrs. Williams

Social Emotional Learning:
K
Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your child will learn that taking time to feel calm before reacting is a helpful first step to solving a problem.
Try This at Home:
Let your child see you taking a moment to feel calm at home when things are busy or stressful. For example, say, “Today was a really busy day. I’m going to take a few slow breaths to help me feel calm.” Invite your child to join you.
1st
Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your child will learn the importance of asking for what they want or need in order to solve a problem. They’ll practice making polite requests with the phrases, “Can I, please . . . ?” and “Could you, please . . .?”
Try This at Home:
Ask your child to sing the problem-solving song they learned this week. Have your child teach you the tune and sing it together. Here are the lyrics:
Can I, can I, can I? Could I, could I, could?
When I have a problem, these words help me feel good.
Can I, can I, can I? Could I, could I, could?
I can ask for what I want to help me feel good.
I know what I want right now, I want to play with you.
Can I please, could I please, play that game too?
Can you, can you, can you? Could you, could you, could?
When I have a problem, these words help me feel good.
Can you, can you, can you? Could you, could you, could?
I can ask for what I need to help me feel good.
I know what I need right now, I’m feeling really sad.
Could you please talk with me about that fight we had?
Can I, can I, can I? Could I, could I, could?
I can ask for what I want to help me feel good.
Can you, can you, can you? Could you, could you, could?
I can ask for what I need to help me feel good.
When I have a problem, these words help me feel good.

Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your child will learn how to state a problem without using blaming words.
Try This at Home:
Ask your child for an example of blame words. Have them explain how they’d say a problem without using blame words.
3rd
Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your child will learn to analyze possible solutions to a problem by considering whether each solution gives each person what they want.
Try This at Home:
Ask your child to explain how they would decide whether a solution works for each person involved in a problem.
4th
Summary:
In this week’s lesson, your child will learn two ways to become a better problem-solver: speaking up for what they need and feeling calm before trying to solve the problem.
Try This at Home:
Talk with your child about times when they might have an interpersonal problem (a disagreement between two or more people) with a friend. Encourage them to use these moments as opportunities to practice feeling calm and speaking up for what they want or need.

Recess Policy at HSE
Recess will be held outdoors whenever possible. Precipitation, sunshine, cloud cover, wind chill, temperature, etc. are all considered when a decision is made for indoor recess. In general, recess will be held indoors when it is raining, or the temperature/wind chill falls below 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Conversely, if 90 degrees Fahrenheit or higher heat index (relative humidity and temperature) is reached, the school will take special precautions for any outdoor activity and teachers will use extreme caution while monitoring students at recess. In addition, students will be provided ample amounts of water before and during recess; Recesses will be shortened or may be moved indoors at the discretion of the principal or designee; Children will be watched/monitored carefully for necessary action. These temperatures are based on recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The full recess policy can be accessed in the student handbook: https://resources.finalsite.net/images/v1691521899/hsek12inus/q7xtlrb1x9zozvwu9p61/ElementaryHandbook-APPROVED-23-24.pdf
