ExCITE! Offers School Librarians and Other Educators an Opportunity to Learn
Exchange, Create, Infuse, Transform, and Energize! That’s what 30 school librarians and other educators from across South Dakota are doing this month in the SD State Library’s ExCITE! Program. The ExCITE! Library Methods course is an annual professional development opportunity (2 grad/undergrad or 30 CECH) for all types of educators including librarians, teachers, specialists, para-professionals, administrators, and coordinators. LSTA federal funding through the Institute of Museum and Library Services provides speakers, resources, and full-tuition scholarships for attendees.
Each year, a different theme is selected for the course. This year’s ExCITE! theme is Civic and Ethical Literacy, which is the third strand of the SD School Library Standards. Participants are focusing on the rights, responsibilities, and opportunities of living and learning in an interconnected world.
Of the 30 students in this year’s course, 18 are certified teacher librarians, 3 are certified classroom teachers, 2 are paraprofessionals, and 7 work in other capacities or are in other stages of their library education. There are also a variety of grade levels represented: 8 work in elementary schools, 7 work in middle schools, 11 work with K-12 students, 1 works in high school, and 3 work in other settings.
If you are interested in learning more about Civic and Ethical Literacy, a similar course will be offered during the 2023-24 school year. And stay tuned for information about next summer’s ExCITE! course and a new theme!
