LEARNING BY THE RIVER
Exploring Local Environmental Stewardship
Last term Mr Leauga took our Year 11 EnviroScience class to the Waiwhakaiho River to connect with the Taranaki Regional Council and local Iwi partners that are responsible for looking after our Taiao. We took measurements to assess the health of our local Awa and learned what the Regional Council and Iwi do to keep our natural environment in good shape. The trip connects to our assessment for Achievement Standard 91920 "Demonstrate understanding of a science-informed response to a local issue".
Thank you to Nicky, Brent and Darlene that guided us on our trip.
NATURE, KNOWLEDGE, AND KAITIAKITANGA
A Semester of Outdoor Discovery
This semester in Outdoor Education, students have developed a wide range of practical skills and knowledge to help them thrive in the outdoors. From building shelters in the bush to cooking food on portable stoves, the class has taken part in a variety of hands-on learning experiences across locations like the Pukeiti Ranges, Weld Road Beach, Lucy’s Gully, and Kiwi Road.
Students have learned survival techniques including knot-tying, fire-making, river safety, and how to identify edible native plants. Alongside this students went on a number of trips. Highlights included rock climbing, bush walks, and volunteering with predator trapping. The Kiwi Road rat-trapping trip gave students real-world conservation experience, reinforcing their understanding of how to protect Aotearoa’s native species. These experiences have not only prepared the class for their final overnight assessment but also built confidence, teamwork, and a deeper respect for the natural environment.
“I’ve learned how to make a good shelter out of tarp, rope, and sticks, how to use a portable gas stove, and how to manage risks in the outdoors.”
“We even went to the mountains where we cooked sausages and noodles. I really enjoyed all the activities like rock climbing and bush walks.”
“One of the most valuable parts has been discovering how traditional Māori knowledge and native plants can be used as natural remedies.”
“We learnt how to create shelters using our surrounding environment and prepare and cook food in the bush.”
“I learned how to do a proper river crossing—just before the rapids where it’s safest—and how to set traps for predators like rats.”
“I learned how to tie knots, build shelters, cook sausages on a gas stove, and even how to make a fire in the ground.”
HANDS-ON CONSERVATION
Students Join Kiwi Trust to Protect Native Wildlife
On Thursday, June 5th, the Outdoor Education class went on a field trip to Kiwi Road to participate in a trapping project with the Taranaki Kiwi Trust. After a safety briefing from Trust members, students were divided into small teams to reset traps along the line. This hands-on experience gave us a valuable opportunity to learn about pest control and how it supports the protection of native wildlife and Papatūānuku.
Word from the students:
“The trip was especially enjoyable because doing it with classmates made the activity more fun and engaging. Overall, the experience was both educational and rewarding, and I would gladly participate again.”
“I think this was a fun and positive learning experience because we got to go out into a bushy environment and learnt how to reset traps, which is important.”
“We learnt how to bait and reset traps and how to get rats out of the traps. Our group caught three rats and one hedgehog.”
SIR PETER BLAKE MARINE EDUCATION & RECREATION CAMP EXPERIENCE
The Sir Peter Blake Marine Education & Recreation Camp (MERC), a not-for-profit charity based in Long Bay, Auckland, is committed to delivering hands-on, marine-based environmental education and outdoor adventures for schools.
We’re excited to have had 86 students who jumped into a fun-filled three-day experience—an unforgettable chance to connect with the ocean, build confidence, and create lasting memories together.
Have a look at the awesome photos below to see what they’ve been up to!

MASQUERADE BALL
A Night to Remember: Celebrating Elegance and Joy at the School Ball
Our school ball was a huge success, filled with fun, laughter, and special moments. Students, staff, and whānau came together to celebrate in style.
The venue looked amazing with decorations that matched our masquerade, creating a magical atmosphere. Delicious kai and great music from Tobe Tones kept everyone dancing all night.
Highlights included the crowning of the Ball Royals, fun activities, and a photo booth for capturing memories. Our students made us proud by showing respect and representing our school well.
A big thank you to the ball committee, led by Aly Scott, and everyone who helped make this night unforgettable!
CELEBRATING PUANGA
A Time of Reflection and Community
This week, our school came together to celebrate Puanga, the Māori New Year. It was a time for reflection, renewal, and community.
A highlight of the day was our shared hāngī. Volunteers worked early in the morning to prepare the kai, and the delicious food brought everyone together.
Students also took part in cultural performances and activities. Our kapa haka group gave a powerful performance, while arts and crafts stations let students try weaving and carving. Storytelling sessions helped everyone learn more about Puanga and its meaning.
A big thank you to everyone who helped make this celebration so special!
