📌Attendance Is Important📌
👩🏻⚖️South Carolina Compulsory Attendance Law👨🏻⚖️
“South Carolina Compulsory Attendance Law requires that a parent or guardian shall require his child to attend regularly a public or private school or kindergarten of this State which has been approved by the State Board of Education, a member school of the South Carolina Independent Schools and Association, a member school of the South Carolina Association of Christian Schools, or some similar organization, or a parochial, denominational, or church-related school, or other programs which have been approved by the State Board of Education f rom the school year in which the child is f ive years of age before September f irst until the child attains his seventeenth birthday or graduates from high school.”
DID YOU KNOW?
Students who fail to attend school could be truant. Truant A child age 6 to 17 years meets the
definition of a truant when the child has three consecutive unlawful absences or a total of five unlawful absences.
Habitual Truant
A “habitual” truant is a child age 12 to 17 years who fails to comply with the intervention plan developed by the school, the child, and the parent(s) or guardian(s) and who accumulates two or more additional unlawful absences. This child may need court intervention and an initial truancy petition may be filed.
Chronic Truant
A “chronic” truant is a child age 12 to 17 years who has been through the school intervention process, has reached the level of a “habitual” truant, has been referred to Family Court and placed on an order to attend school, and continues to accumulate unlawful absences. Should other community alternatives and referrals fail to remedy the attendance problem, the “chronic” truant may be referred to the Family Court for violation of a previous court order.
Lawful Absences
• Absences caused by a student’s own illness and whose attendance in school would endanger his or her health or the health of others,
• Absences due to an illness or death in the student’s immediate family,
• Absences due to a recognized religious holiday of the student’s faith, and
• Absences due to activities that are approved in advance by the principal.
Unlawful Absences
• Absences of a student without the knowledge of his or her parents, and
• Absences of a student without acceptable cause with the knowledge of his or her parents.
🚨If Your Child Is Absent From School🚨
🚨Please Send A Doctor's Note OR Parent's Note🚨
🚨To Ms. Melanie Culbreth at melanie.culbreth@spart1.org🚨
🚨🚨🚨PLEASE READ🚨🚨🚨
📵ADMINISTRATIVE CELL PHONE AND PDD (Personal Digital Devices) RULES📵
Definitions
● For the purpose of these rules, personal digital devices (PDDs) are defined as personal devices that have the capability to transmit or receive wireless communication, access the internet, or store and/or play digital media. Specifically, this includes but is not limited to: cell phones, tablets, pagers, personal gaming devices, digital cameras, ear pods, headphones etc.
● For the purposes of these rules, school day is specific to each school and denotes the time during which students are required to be in attendance. This timeframe begins with the signal for the first instructional period and concludes with the signal for the end of the last instructional period.
● For the purposes of these rules, academic instructional time refers to the periods during the school day when students are scheduled to be in an academic class and or school activity. This time does not include before school, lunch, transitions, and after school.
The possession of cell phones and other personal digital devices (PDDs) is a privilege extended to Spartanburg One students with the expressed, written consent of their parents/guardians through their acknowledgment in the Student/Parent Handbook.
Elementary/Middle Schools
● Unless specifically directed by school administration or school staff, the use of cell phones or other PDDs is forbidden for all students at all times during the school day.
● During the school day devices must be turned off or silenced and remain in a student’s locker, backpack, or personal storage space (handbag, purse, etc.).
All Students
● Photographing, audio recording, or videotaping on Spartanburg One property is not allowed at any time without administrative permission and the expressed, written consent of the students, staff members or other persons being photographed or recorded. Transmission, distribution, or display of digital media obtained on school property is not allowed.
Violation of these rules will result in consequences outlined in the Student/Parent Handbook.
● A student who refuses to comply with directives regarding their cell phone or PDD when requested by any member of the faculty and/or staff will be considered insubordinate. This may be disciplined as a Level II disciplinary offense outlined in the Student/Parent Handbook.
Disciplinary Actions
Due to the potential disruption a cell phone or PDD may cause to the instructional environment the disciplinary actions outlined below will be strictly enforced.
● 1st violation: The student will be asked to put the cell phone or PDD away and receive a documented verbal warning.
● 2nd violation: The student will be asked to put the cell phone or PDD away and receive a discipline referral. The student will serve 1 day of In-School Suspension.
● 3rd violation: The student will be asked to put the cell phone or PDD away, receive a discipline referral, and administration will conduct a parent conference. The student will serve 2 days of In-School Suspension.
● 4th (or further) violation: The student will be asked to put the cell phone or PDD away, receive a discipline referral, and administration will conduct a parent conference. All privileges for cell phones and PDDs will be removed from the student for the remainder of the year. The student will serve 3 days of In-School Suspension.
Disclaimer
Students will assume all responsibility and risks relating to their possession and use of their personal digital devices, including any and all data and content at all times. Spartanburg One employees will not be responsible for storing, supporting, safeguarding, or troubleshooting any student-owned personal digital devices. The district, its trustees, administrators, and employees shall not be responsible or liable for the theft, loss, data loss, damage, destruction, misuse, or vandalism of any student-owned personal digital device brought onto district or school property.
