Franklin Chang-Díaz, born in San José, Costa Rica, earned his doctorate in Applied Plasma Physics from MIT. He worked on controlled fusion, led fusion propulsion teams for potential Mars missions, became an astronaut in 1981, served as an in-orbit capsule communicator during the first Spacelab flight, and flew on seven space shuttle missions. He retired from NASA in 2005.

- Last week, ZESD 6 students enjoyed a snack of locally grown radishes and pineapples for the Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program.
Shiloh Park Girls Volleyball had their last match in Zion of the season Thursday night against Miguel Juarez Middle School. During the game, the girls and coaches communicated well and were cheered on from the sidelines by families and community members.
- During parent-teacher conferences last week, ZCMS families and students had the opportunity to visit student-run booths, watch performances by ZESD 6 student dancers, listen to a vocal performance by Fernando de la Oca, and participate in a raffle.
- East kindergarten students spent a beautiful fall day at Kroll’s Harvest Farm on Thursday. The students could hear about and interact with barnyard animals, tour a corn maze, and enjoy a tractor ride around the farm.
