Message from the Principal
Dear Algonquin Lakes Elementary School Families,
It was a great week at ALES!
Our students worked hard and demonstrated the Key of Excellence of Commitment.
This week, we are continuing Access testing for our second language learners. They did an outstanding job last week staying focused and showing what they know. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher, Mrs. Maher, or Mrs. Gonzalez.
The winter season is certainly taking a toll on our health, and we understand that it's important for students to stay home when they’re feeling sick. Please refer to the Nurse's Corner for more information on health guidelines. Our custodial staff has been working hard to disinfect the classrooms, and we encourage you to remind your child to practice good handwashing habits.
Valentine’s Day is this Friday, February 14! Only pre-approved volunteers, identified through our PTO and who have completed the D300 volunteer protocols, will be allowed to volunteer for the Valentine’s Day classroom parties. If your child is bringing valentines to school, please make sure to send enough for each student in the class. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to another wonderful week!
Kind Regards,
Marilynn (Smith) Jankovich
Principal, Algonquin Lakes Elementary School

At Home Math Practice with a Game of KABOOM!
Playing KABOOM is a fun and easy activity to help your child learn and practice math skills. Here’s a step-by-step guide to setting it up. Please scroll down to view videos of ALES Students demonstrating the different ways your family can use this game to practice fundamental math skills.
Materials:
Popsicle sticks (colored or plain)
A marker or pen
A container (e.g., a cup, jar, or small box)
Preparation:
Label the sticks:
Write numbers or math problems on one end of most sticks.
Leave the other end blank so players can’t see the writing when it’s in the container.
On a few sticks, write the word Kaboom instead of a number or math problem.
Place all the sticks in the container:
Position them so that the written part is hidden inside and not visible to the players.
How to Play:
Setup:
Sit in a circle or around a table.
Place the container with popsicle sticks in the center.
Taking turns:
Players take turns drawing a stick from the container.
If the stick has a number or problem, they must complete the desired task (identifying the number, counting forwards from the number, counting backwards from the number, counting by tens from the chosen number, or solving a math problem).
If they succeed, they keep the stick as a point.
Kaboom sticks:
If a player draws a stick that says Kaboom, they must return the Kaboom stick along with two collected sticks to the container.
Continue playing:
The game continues for a set amount of time. You get to choose! One-Ten-Fifteen Minutes! Any amount of time for practice is great practice!
Scoring:
Count the sticks each player has collected.
The player with the most sticks at the end of the game wins.

D300 Sick Day Guidelines
Flu season is upon us and this past week we have been seeing an increase in the number of students reporting flu-like symptoms.
To help prevent and limit transmission:
- Remind your child of the importance of good hand washing especially after using the restroom and before eating. Hands should be washed with warm water and soap and rubbed together for at least 20 seconds.
- Remind your child to cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or their arms and to avoid sharing personal items such as hats, gloves, utensils, straws, lip balms and water bottles.
- Please keep your child home when they are sick to prevent the spread to others. If a fever is present, please keep them home until they are fever free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication.
- Please report any symptoms of fever, cough, sore throat, vomiting or diarrhea to the school attendance line.
