Welcome to the Latest Edition of Tap Into Maple Run!
Each week, we celebrate the moments that define our district—a place of learning, collaboration, and growth. From hands-on experiences to creative showcases, our students, staff, and families continue to make Maple Run a thriving community of excellence.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
This week, Fairfield Center School (FCS) and Saint Albans Town Educational Center (SATEC) students kicked off Monday with a trip to Jay Peak, where they spent the day skiing, snowboarding, and enjoying professional lessons. The fresh mountain air and the excitement of learning new skills made for an unforgettable experience. It was yet another wonderful opportunity for students to engage with their environment and strengthen friendships outside the classroom.
A Celebration of Science & Curiosity
Tuesday marked a milestone for Fairfield Center School as 7th and 8th graders held their first-ever Science Fair! The event showcased impressive projects that reflected the hard work, creativity, and inquisitive spirit of our students. It was inspiring to see families and community members come together to celebrate these young scientists.
Staying Connected & Informed
On Wednesday, the Maple Run Unified School District Board met at Central Office for a productive discussion on key district initiatives. Thank you to all the community members who attended and contributed to the conversation—your voices and support play a crucial role in shaping the future of our schools.
A Winter Pause
Thursday brought us our first Snow Day of the season! Whether students and staff spent it outside enjoying the fresh snowfall or cozy indoors with a good book, it was a well-deserved day to rest and recharge.
The Arts Take Center Stage
Friday night at Saint Albans Town Educational Center was a true celebration of creativity and talent at the 3rd & 4th Grade Fine Arts Night. Families and friends admired stunning student artwork displayed throughout the school and enjoyed musical performances that highlighted our young artists' dedication and hard work. Thank you to all who attended and supported this fantastic event—our students shine brighter because of our strong community.
Looking Ahead
As we continue through February, let’s stay engaged and involved in the many upcoming events across Maple Run. Each week brings new opportunities to learn, connect, and grow together. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey—our students, families, and staff make Maple Run truly special!
Spotlight on Ashley Duncan-Aubin: Inspiring Confidence Through Cosmetology
This week on the Tap Into Maple Run podcast (Episode 20), John & myself had the pleasure of speaking with Ashley Duncan-Aubin, the dedicated Cosmetology Instructor at Northwest Career & Technical Center (NCTC). Known as Miss A to her students, Ashley is not only a passionate educator but also a proud 2004 graduate of the very program she now teaches. With over 20 years of experience as a licensed cosmetologist in Franklin County, she brings a wealth of knowledge, skill, and heart to her classroom and beyond.
Ashley’s teaching philosophy is simple: watch, learn, and do. She believes in blending textbook learning with hands-on experience, ensuring that her students graduate with both the technical skills and confidence they need to thrive. More than just teaching hair and beauty techniques, she instills in her students the value of service to the community and the power of helping others.
The NCTC Community Salon: Learning While Giving Back
Miss A and her students operate the NCTC Community Salon four days a week, providing affordable beauty services to the public. From haircuts and coloring to facials, waxing, manicures, and pedicures, these services are offered at a discounted rate to ensure accessibility for all. The salon is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 12–3 PM.
💇♀️ To book an appointment, call 802-527-6108 or email aduncan@maplerun.org.
Wednesdays are extra special at the salon, as all NCTC and BFA students can receive free services. Recently, the salon team traveled to St. Albans City School, where they provided over 40 students with their first-ever professional haircuts—an experience that brought smiles, confidence, and joy to so many young students. Ashley takes immense pride in her students’ ability to make a difference through their craft.
More Than a Haircut: Building Confidence & Well-Being
Ashley’s goal is to help her students see the impact of their work—not just in skill, but in the confidence they give to others. She believes that when people look good, they feel good, and this mind-body connection can have a positive effect on mental well-being, motivation, and self-esteem.
We are grateful to have educators like Ashley at NCTC, shaping the next generation of talented stylists while giving back to the Franklin County community. Be sure to listen to her inspiring conversation on Tap Into Maple Run this week!
