Frequently Asked Questions!
Q. Can my child ride home on the bus with a friend?
A. No, students are not permitted to ride on a friend's bus. Please make carpool arrangements.
Q. What is the procedure for picking my student up early?
A. If a student needs to be picked up early, a note should be sent with the student to the front office in the morning, stating the time the parent would like him/her at the front office. The student will get it stamped by the office and this is the pass to come up front to be checked out. We do this so as not to interrupt the class and instructional time. Please do not call the front office requesting your child be sent to the front office. Once you are in the building, we can call them up.
Q. What if my student forgets something and I need to bring it to school?
A. While we hope that students come prepared each day, we have 3 light blue carts in the front office labeled by grade level. We have a small shelf next to the carts stocked with tape, markers and paper for labeling items dropped off. Place the item on the cart of your students' grade level. Unfortunately, we do not call students for forgotten items. The student may pick up items between classes or at lunch time from the cart.
Q. What if my student forgets his/her device?
A. Parents can drop the device at the front desk where we keep them until the students come to get them. It is the students' responsibility to pick them up between classes or at lunch time. Unfortunately, we are unable to call into classrooms for forgotten items.
Q. What if my child gets sick at school?
A. If your student feels sick during the school day, he/she should always go to the clinic. The clinic needs to keep a record of students who are ill. Students SHOULD NOT call or text on their cell phones or smart watches for parents to pick them up.
Q. Is my child allowed to use their cell phone to call home?
A. Cell phones are not allowed to be used during school time. There is a phone in the front office if the student needs to call home. We encourage students to come prepared to school each day, thus the phone is for emergencies only.
Q. Where do I turn in student attendance notes?
A. If your student is out of school, there needs to be a parent or doctors note sent into the front office or emailed within 5 days of being absent.
You may email Jackie Dejo at Dejo@fultonschools.org.
Q. How do I get my students absence to be excused?
A. To have your students absent reflect (excused) in Infinite Campus, you will need to submit a note to the front desk or email Jackie Dejo at Dejo@fultonschools.org
Q. Do I need my ID when checking out my student?
A. Please be prepared to show your ID when checking out your student. This is for the safety of our students, faculty and staff.
Q. What if my student needs medication at school?
A. Students are not allowed to carry medications with them at school unless they have a permission form (SHS-2) signed and on file in the clinic. This includes prescription and over the counter medications of any kind. You may also fill out an SHS - 1 form to keep medication, prescription or over the counter, in the clinic. Our clinic assistant will dispense per orders from form.
Clinic Assistant - Stephanie Sorina - SorinaS@fultonschools.org
Q. What time is the school store open?
A. The school store is open from 8:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Q. What time are students allowed into the school in the morning?
A. The school opens at 7:50 a.m.
Q. Do I need to call the front office if my student is sick for the day?
A. You DO NOT need to call the front office if a student is out sick. Upon returning to school, send a note to the front office or email and the attendance clerk will be adjusted.
Attendance Clerk is Jackie Dejo - Dejo@fultonschools.org
Q. What if my child comes to school late?
A. Parents DO NOT need to bring children in if they are late. Students DO have to report to the office to get a pass to their classroom.
Q. Are students allowed to leave the building without checking out?
A. A parent MUST always come to the front office to check students out of school. This is for the safety of the student.
Note: 1. If someone else is checking your student out they must be on the Infinite Campus Parent Portal Contact list.
2. You may also send a note in with your student with the first and last name of the person picking your child up.
Remember to always send a note with your student to the front desk the morning of the check-out. Please be prepared to show your ID.
Arrival and Dismissal Information
To help us with a smooth arrival and dismissal, please review the attached documents. More important tips are below.
- The bus is the most efficient transportation for most families as our parking lot is very small for our school size. (Please be patient especially during the first two weeks of school.)
- If your student will be a bus rider, please start using the bus in the AM on the 1st day of school. This helps students and bus drivers with afternoon bus stops since both will be familiar with correct stops. Most concerns happen when students don’t ride the bus to school the first day but decide to ride home on the bus.
- For safety reasons, students must be escorted by parents if they are using the red crosswalks on the attached documents. Students may use the yellow crosswalks without parents. However, remind students to look both ways when crossing any street.
- The earliest drop off time is 7:50AM when doors open. All early birds wait in the cafeteria until 8AM. At 8AM, 6th and 7th graders move to the gym. 8th graders remain in the cafeteria. Students are released to go to homeroom/lockers at approximately 8:35AM. Homeroom begins at 8:55AM.
- If you would like to avoid traffic in the afternoons, arrive at 4:20PM for carpool.
- Please continue to pull all the way forward in the carpool line during morning and afternoon drop-off. Other cars are behind you, and extra steps are healthy for us.
- Please follow the directions of the AMMS staff during arrival and dismissal. (Please let me know if you would like to serve as a volunteer during arrival or dismissal.)
- Expect delays during the first two weeks of school. Buses complete an elementary school run and then a high school run before arriving at middle school. Elementary schools are very cautious to make sure that students get home the correct way. This takes extra time while routines are being established. Thank you in advance for your patience.
- Please always respect AMMS staff and bus drivers. There are nationwide shortages. Thank you for helping us keep the Best and Brightest!
Reminder- Please make sure your students know their bus number prior to Monday. You may use this link if needed. Bus Information Link

Future-Proofing Our Children
Inspiring kids to think, empathize, and thrive in the A.I. era

Date: 8/10/2024
Time: 2–3:30pm
EVENT DESCRIPTION:
The esteemed mathematician and educator, Professor Po-Shen Loh will be visiting Shaker Heights, OH as part of his 2024 national tour, which was covered in Wall Street Journal (https://www.wsj.com/articles/chatgpt-ai-math-po-shen-loh-1e9f80dc?st=aq9570oajc7gi2b&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink).
As AI advances at shocking speed, what is the future of humanity? How should people develop skills that will still be useful in a world filled with automation? The speaker, Carnegie Mellon math professor Po-Shen Loh, traveled to 100 cities last year, speaking with (and learning from) thousands of audiences on this topic, on a tour which was even covered by the Wall Street Journal. His perspective combines insight from having served as the national coach of the USA Math Olympiad team for a decade, together with his firsthand experience inventing new solutions for large-scale real-world problems from pandemic control to problem-solving education. In this talk, he will share his latest recommendations on how to lean into what makes us human, how to navigate the future landscape of education (including college), and how to learn how to solve unfamiliar problems. Many of his recommendations are quite different from how students and parents currently approach life. To substantiate this advice, he will also share his own story of how he used these principles to invent some of the real-world solutions mentioned above.
Po-Shen Loh is a social entrepreneur and inventor, working across the spectrum of mathematics, education, and healthcare, all around the world. He is a math professor at Carnegie Mellon University and served a decade-long term as the national coach of the USA International Mathematical Olympiad team from 2013–2023. He has pioneered innovations ranging from a scalable way to learn challenging math live online at comparable engagement to live-streaming entertainment, to a new way to control pandemics by leveraging self-interest.
As an academic, Po-Shen has earned distinctions ranging from an International Mathematical Olympiad silver medal to the United States Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. His scientific research considers a variety of questions that lie at the intersection of combinatorics (the study of discrete systems), probability theory, and computer science. As an educator, he was the coach of Carnegie Mellon University’s math team when it achieved its first-ever #1 rank among all North American universities, and the coach of the USA Math Olympiad team when it achieved its first-ever back-to-back #1-rank victories in 2015 and 2016, and then again in 2018 and 2019. His research and educational outreach takes him to cities across the world, reaching over 10,000 people each year through public lectures and events, and he has featured in or co-created videos totaling over 21 million YouTube views.
Po-Shen received his undergraduate degree in mathematics from Caltech in 2004, graduating with the highest GPA in his class. He received a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Cambridge in 2005, where he was supported by a Winston Churchill Foundation Scholarship. He continued his studies at Princeton, supported by a Hertz Foundation Fellowship and a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, where he completed his Ph.D. in mathematics at the end of 2009, and has been on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University ever since.
