What's Happening at LIS.....
Honouring Vanessa Furlan: A Bench Memorial Ceremony
On a beautiful afternoon filled with warmth, memories, and music, the Ladysmith Intermediate School (LIS) community came together to honour the life and legacy of long-time LIS teacher Vanessa Furlan with a heartfelt Bench Memorial Ceremony. Friends, family, former students, and staff gathered in a spirit of remembrance and love for an educator who touched the lives of so many.
The ceremony opened with the powerful presence of a combined drum group from LIS and Ladysmith Secondary School (LSS). Elders and LIS Hul’q’umi’num’ teacher Cameron Park shared words of deep meaning with students and guests, highlighting the cultural and spiritual importance of being a witness. Mr. Park explained that to witness is not simply to observe, but to carry forward the memory and lessons of the day—to hold space for truth and community connection.
The newly installed bench now stands as a symbol of Vanessa’s dedication, kindness, and unwavering belief in every student’s potential. It is a place to pause, to reflect, and to remember the educator, colleague, and friend who gave so much of herself to the LIS community.
Huy ch’qa, Ms. Furlan.
Grade 6 and 7 Students Get Active with Motus Workouts
Grade 6 and 7 students have been diving into fun and engaging fitness sessions at LIS and the Motus Studio, thanks to the support of our amazing PAC. Led by Coach Elise, these CrossFit-inspired workouts have become a highlight of the week for many students.
Coach Elise brings high energy and encouragement to every session, creating an atmosphere where everyone feels welcome and motivated to try their best. The focus isn’t just on fitness – it’s on having fun, setting personal goals, and celebrating progress. A big thank you to our Parent Advisory Council for funding these sessions. Your support helps provide opportunities that build healthy habits, boost mental wellness, and bring our school community together through movement.
Huy’ch’qa!
This week’s DRAMAFEST update! (April 25th)
PRACTISING AT HOME
Please encourage your child to read their lines aloud to you as often as possible. Take-home scripts were handed out to students before spring break over a month ago. We still have quite a few students having difficulty with reading their lines fluently. This greatly increases the length of the performance and can cause stress. Please practise the lines with your child at home to ensure confidence.
SOME SPECIAL DATES TO KEEP IN MIND…
• April 28 to May 2 (NEXT WEEK!) à COSTUME CHECK
All students will bring their costume pieces from home in a bag for this meeting to show
Mr. M for approval. The costume check will take place during the class’ first fine arts period of the week. The costume list can be downloaded below and is also posted on Mr. M’s drama website. https://pitchblackdrama.weebly.com/dramafest.html
• May 7 à RSVP form deadline
An RSVP form was sent home with your child over a week ago. You can also download and print it off Mr M’s drama website. Please indicate on the form how many guests will be coming to watch your child’s performance. If you would like to attend other performances of other divisions as well, please also mark this on the form. Your child must return the RSVP form to their teacher no later than Wednesday, May the 7th so we can ensure proper seating.
** Tickets are not being used for any performances in Division 1-13 performances. **
*** Do remember that we also invite you to come watch our special ‘Tales from the Twilight Zone’ stage show that takes place on Friday, May 16th with a 5:30 start time. Tickets for this show can be ordered on the RSVP form as well. We would love to see you there! ***
• May 7-9 à DRESS REHEARSALS
1 hour for each class to practise on-stage, in full costume. All students should be present for their dress rehearsal since it’s the only time that they can practise on-stage for their performance. Dress rehearsals build confidence.

Please follow up with a note to your child’s teacher when your child returns to school so the teacher can address any missed work, homework issues, etc. Also a reminder that if students need to leave early, they should be signed out in the main office.
School Closure
The following is a reminder about the NLPS school closure procedure for students.
If schools are closed due to snow, or any other weather-related problems, announcements will be made on local radio stations (WOLF 106.9 FM, WAVE 102.3 FM, and 91.7 COAST FM) by 7 a.m., or earlier, on the day of the closure. Please do not call the radio station – tune in and listen for the announcements, which will be made on a regular basis.
In addition, the district will post the information on the district’s website, Twitter, Facebook, and mobile app. Families may also receive a message through the School Messenger notification system via phone, email, or text. Please keep in mind, however, that there may be situations where this is not always possible, for example, power outages or technical problems. The most reliable method is to listen to the local radio stations.
