This week, teachers at Pine Street Elementary participated in an underground, staff-only spirit week. Themes included wearing all black, anything but a water bottle, dressing like a gym teacher, and flannel day. Do you think the students caught on?
Ready, Set, Speed Stack! On Tuesday, December 3rd, Mr. Bell from Speed Stacks visited Steeby Elementary gym classes to provide the experience of Sport Stacking. Students learned rules and techniques before the competition began. We have some speedy stackers!
Student Technology Showcase
On Wednesday, December 4th, three students from Wayland Union Schools were invited to the Student Technology Showcase in Lansing, Michigan. This conference offered the opportunity for student-led teams from around the state to demonstrate best practices on how technology can enhance teaching and learning for Michigan students. Student representatives from Wayland Union Schools were Evalyn Holwerda (5th grade), Zakary Kadwell (8th grade) and Spencer Miller (9th grade).
Computer science has allowed students at Wayland Union Schools to utilize their problem-solving skills in innovative ways through computational thinking. Students in grades K-12 gain valuable experience through a variety of unique opportunities including Apple's Everyone Can Code curriculum, Hour of Code, Code.org, and a variety of hands-on tools such as Finch Robots and Spheros. At the high school level, students have the opportunity to take a coding course that exposes them to a variety of career options in the computer science field. Students as young as third grade have built their own apps! This work has been supported utilizing funds from MDE's 99b and IET grants. These grants have provided professional development work for staff which resulted in immediate implementation with students.
