Thank you, Ms. Wolfe. Our school has been nominated a Purple Star School. April is the month of the military child. We started this with a visit from the 28th Military Police Detachment and 549th Military Working Dog Detachment. MWD Aramis and MWD Ddena demonstrated their extensive detection and bite work skills.
Also from Ft. Wainwright Eve Baker's therapy dog visited classrooms.

School Closure- We Must Stay Proactive- It's not over!
The proposed budget is based on an estimated contribution from the borough and state
The budget that the borough and the state will pass is still to be determined. If the district does not get what it requested, the board must return to the drawing board to balance the budget. We hope they don't reconsider school closures.
In Wednesday's Daily Newsminer, the Mayor spoke about the upcoming borough budget cycle- which will be unveiled on April 3rd. We have paper copies of the article at the school if you want to learn more about the proposed education funding and the tax cap. It is looking grim.
The latest education funding bill from the House is HB 392
This bill was brought forth after the veto of HB 140. This bill included:
- Create a charter termination appeal process through DEED
- Create a charter school coordinator position at DEED
- Increase to pupil transportation funding
- Increases funding for correspondence programs to the full ADM
- Increase the BSA by $680
- Include $500 per student to support the Alaska Reads Act
- Give lump sum bonus payments to teachers
DEED shared proposed amendments for a committee substitute (CS) for HB 392. The new CS will remove teacher bonuses and add language, allowing the state board of education to authorize charter schools. It will also lower the reading support money to $180 for all students, with an additional amount for Title I. Amendments for the bill will be shared during its next scheduled hearing, which is currently not set.
