A MESSAGE FROM DR. ELLISON
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope this message finds you well. I want to share some important work Glen Grove is doing around technology well-being and social/emotional learning for our students.
There is no question that technology is an integral part of our lives, enhancing our ability to learn, connect, and communicate. However, with these benefits also come challenges that can impact our students’ mental health, social skills, and academic performance.
As a school community, we are committed to fostering a healthy digital environment for our students. Here are some initiatives and strategies we are implementing. This year we are incorporating digital literacy lessons into our curriculum, teaching students how to navigate the online world safely and responsibly. This includes lessons on media balance, privacy/security, relationships, cyberbullying, and media sources. The lessons are sourced from Common Sense Media and can be reviewed on their website.
At home, we encourage you to talk to your child about these lessons as well as help develop screen time awareness in the home. Some steps that you can take to support your child include:
Keeping devices out of the bedroom, particularly at bedtime as we know technology can impact student sleep
Review the lessons at home with your child
Establish clear boundaries and expectations around the use of social media
Encourage your child to report any unkind communication between peers
Ensure that your child’s school iPad is only used for school-related purposes
We believe that a collaborative approach between school and home is essential in fostering a positive digital environment for our students. Together, we can equip our children with the tools they need to navigate the digital world safely and effectively.
Thank you for your continued partnership in ensuring the well-being of our students. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.

STUDENT DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP PROCEDURES
We appreciate your cooperation in making Glen Grove a safe and welcoming place for our students during entry and exit. Our staff will be out welcoming and helping our families understand these procedures during the start and end of the school day.
Morning Drop-Off: Car drop-offs occur in the West parking lot and all car lane students enter door B. Students should exit the cars in the designated area close to door B. Please do not let your child out of the car before the designated exit area as it is unsafe and slows down the car lane. We will open the doors of the school at 7:30.
Afternoon Pick-Up: Car pick-ups will also occur at Door B. Please enter the line in the West parking lot. We will have students enter cars from the designated area close to Door B. Our staff will be there supporting students and drivers to ensure both safety and efficiency.
We greatly appreciate your cooperation in making our school a safe and welcoming place for everyone. A safe and efficient car lane requires everyone to work together.
STUDENT MATERIALS & LUNCH DROP OFF DURING THE SCHOOL DAY
We will continue with the procedures put in place last year as a result of improvements made to all D34 buildings. The outer door to the vestibule will be locked throughout the school day. While this is great for safety and security, it will make it a bit more challenging to receive forgotten student items during the school day. While we understand that students forget things from time to time, we also want to minimize classroom disruptions and traffic in the office.
If you are dropping something off for your child in the middle of the school day, please leave it labeled on the cart in the vestibule. Our office staff will do a morning and afternoon check of the cart and notify teachers. We will also do a student delivery of materials before lunchtime to ensure everyone has what they need for lunch and recess.

NEWS FROM THE LRC
It’s Pumpkin Time!
The Optional Pumpkin Character Contest is back again. Students will be voting for 5 categories. The winning pumpkins will be announced and given a handmade ribbon by a student volunteer.
Please encourage your children to use these 5 categories when planning their pumpkin:
1. The most creative use of materials
2. The best representation of a book character
3. The best representation of a book hero or a book villain
4. The most unusual book character representation
5. The best representation of a book
Real or fake pumpkins can be decorated just not carved. (We don’t want any rotting ones). We are encouraging everyone to focus on just the pumpkin to tell the story, not on an elaborate background. Students can bring in their decorated pumpkin starting Wednesday, October 16th through Tuesday, October 22nd. If any student has difficulty getting a pumpkin and/or supplies, please reach out to me. We want everyone who would like to participate to be able to. Students may work on this with family or friends. Pumpkins need to be taken home by Friday, November 1.

SCIENCE NEWS
Welcome to Unit 1 of science, 3rd grade Gator families! This week we kicked off our investigations into force and motion by beginning to differentiate between balanced & unbalanced forces. We've been reminded that a simple push or a pull are examples of forces we can easily demonstrate in the classroom with everyday materials, and will continue to deepen our investigation into other forces that we interact with quite frequently. Additionally, the 3rd graders were introduced to a fun new online simulation that they will work with again and again throughout all of their science learning here at Glen Grove. Ask them about the candy cart tug of war simulation. It seemed to be quite the engaging tool!
As one group starts up, another one finishes science. Our 4th grade Earth scientists officially wrap up their 1st unit of science this week into next thinking about how to solve a real world issue: shoreline erosion along Chicago's lakefront. They will use their knowledge of erosion, observations from a recent wave action lab activity, as well as inspiration from examples of how humans attempt to control erosion along shorelines around the United States to come up with their own unique way to protect Chicago's lakefront. So far we've heard alot of creative thinking, so please ask your child what their idea is and how it would prevent wave action from further destruction. If you want to dive deeper into national parks that really show off weathering and erosion, check out this website!
Get ready 5th grade....science is coming! Next week a few 5th grade classrooms will be ready to begin their Unit 1: Properties of Matter (a.k.a. chemistry). We have a brand new lab worked into this unit, focused on solving a problem with pancakes. No pancakes will be harmed (or eaten), but I am sure a mess will be made and fun will be had by all. Stay tuned for much much more!

ILLINOIS FLAG DRAWING CONTEST
PE News - Special Shout Out!
We wanted to share a little something from our PE Teachers that truly illustrates one of the ways Glen Grove is such a special place. Please see what they had to say about the Mile Run on Wednesday:
I just wanted to say how incredibly awesome the entire school performed at the mile run yesterday. The overall effort and sportsmanship that was on display yesterday was pretty amazing.
The first class of Roy, Margolis, and Champney started cheering for students still running the mile. Ms. Marcotte and I were passing out clothes pins to students still running and we looked up and about 10-15 students were standing along the path clapping and cheering the students who were still running.
We mentioned the cheering to each subsequent class and low and behold, EVERY single class took it upon themselves to either cheer for students still running or they actually ran with some of them to help motivate them to finish.
We were just very proud of the overall effort and sportsmanship each class portrayed yesterday.
P.S. Sam Crowley beat the boys 5th grade record yesterday with a time of 6:07!
