Read Across America
Last week, in celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday, Mrs. Vasey's English 9H class had the delightful opportunity to engage with the younger members of our community. Partnering with Mrs. Orduno's kindergarten class from Killian Elementary, our students spent the period sharing the magic of reading.
The event was filled with excitement and enthusiasm. Our celebration opened with a class performance from the kindergarteners reading "Green Eggs and Ham" aloud together. Afterward, each kindergartener paired up with one of our Rowland students and spent the rest of the period reading through various children's books. From "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" to "The Cat in the Hat," the timeless tales captivated the imaginations of both our readers and their young audience. Each kindergartener left the day with their own Green Eggs (slime)!
As the pages turned and the stories unfolded, laughter filled the room, creating a joyous atmosphere of learning and excitement. Our students read to the kindergarteners and engage them in interactive discussions about the stories, encouraging curiosity and imagination.
Events like this are crucial in creating a sense of community and instilling a love for reading from an early age. We promote literacy and nurture empathy, leadership, and communication skills among our students.
As Dr. Seuss himself once said, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Let us continue to inspire and empower the next generation through the magic of reading!
IB Psychology Highlight
As part of their International Baccalaureate (IB) Psychology curriculum requirements, junior students are tasked with conducting a psychological experiment. Juniors Nayeli Arango, Araksi Chichmanian, Kian Oda, and Samuel Park embarked on a study exploring the Multi-store Model of Memory and the Serial Position Effect. To facilitate their research, the group enlisted volunteers for their experiment, which was held in Mr. Cole’s classroom during lunch last week.
The research team is currently in the process of analyzing their data. They will compile their insights and conclusions drawn from observing participant behavior into a comprehensive paper. This endeavor not only serves as a vital component of their IB psychology course but also provides practical experience in conducting real-world psychological research.
World History Highlight
In a dynamic classroom activity, students of World History delved into the intricate world of propaganda by creating posters inspired by both World War I and modern conflicts. These artistic endeavors served as windows into the past and present, allowing students to decipher the underlying goals and tools employed in shaping public perception. Through thoughtful analysis and critical thinking, they honed their ability to discern the subtle nuances of propaganda, gaining a deeper understanding of how biases are crafted and disseminated throughout history. This hands-on approach not only fostered creativity but also empowered students to recognize the power of imagery and rhetoric in shaping societal narratives.
US History Highlight
In the captivating realm of U.S. History, students are currently immersing themselves in the intricacies of the Cold War era. Armed with their historical thinking skills, they engage in collaborative discussions, meticulously analyzing a treasure trove of Cold War documents. Through this immersive journey, students not only uncover the political maneuvers and ideological clashes that defined the period but also sharpen their ability to discern historical context and evaluate primary sources. This interactive approach deepens their understanding of Cold War dynamics. It cultivates critical thinking abilities essential for navigating the complexities of history.
