Sailor Scoop - April 2025
Principals' Message
Hello VES Families,
We hope you had a great spring break! Returning from break is often the time of year where we start to see students thinking ahead to summer and the excitement of the end of the year starts to set in. We still have a lot of learning to do to make sure that our students are making a years worth of growth for this school year. One way to help with that is to keep a normal routine each night. The days are getting longer and warmer. Sometimes that makes is hard to get to bed on time. Don't forget to read for 20 minutes each night. This is the most impactful thing you can do for your student. Remember this includes your reading to them! We appreciate your help in staying on track and focused for the next 40ish school days.
Our 3rd graders will be taking the state reading test for both reading and math over the next few weeks. Reading test dates are April 15th and 16th. The math test will take place on April 29th and 30th. Please make sure your 3rd graders have lots of rest and a good breakfast on those days.
This month will be our reunification drill on April 17th. There is a copy of the letter that was sent home before break further down in this e-mail. One thing we did forget to put on the letter is that there will not be any afternoon preschool on reunification day.
We wanted to thank everyone who was able to attend our reading night, summer activity fair and spring fling last month. April brings our last Tales with a Teacher on April 16th at Ritter Library at 6:30! We hope you will join us. April also has the PTO Easter Bunny Brunch event, see the flyer below!
Coming up in May there will be a couple of opportunities to volunteer. Please be on the lookout for information from the PTO to sign up to help with VES presents science (May 15th and 16th) and May 28th for field day. Consider attending our April PTO meeting on the 9th at 6:30 to learn more about our PTO activities!
It is going to be an exciting April,
Matt Malear & Breanna Rebman

Spotlight on Specials
Students at Vermilion Elementary School participated in the Kids Heart Challenge and raised $5457 for the American Heart Association. Kids Heart Challenge teaches students how to take care of their own hearts while experiencing the joy of giving to those with sick hearts. It was such a fun week and their hard work was truly appreciated. Pictured are the Top Fund Raisers for this year's Kids Heart Challenge event.
PBIS Corner
Thank you to the families who have already nominated staff members! It truly made their day brighter when I shared it with them! Included is the link so that families have the chance to nominate staff members that make a positive impact on students! It can be anonymous or you can include your/your student's name. We will share the feedback and celebrate with our staff! Thank you for helping to make VES an even better place!
We would love to seek feedback from our families to gather input and determine how we can best include families in PBIS. Please email me at brebman@vermilionschools.org if you would like your feedback and questions to be included in the process. Thank you!
Parent Resource: Book Recommendation
A colleague introduced me to the book The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. As a parent to an 11, 8 and 5 year old and an educator the topic intrigued me. I have begun to read it and many of the ideas resonate deeply and affirm much of what I see in my own children and others. I thought I would share the recommendation with other families who may be interested in learning more about what they can do to help.
- Mrs. Rebman
I will share some questions to reflect on as well:
*Think about a time when you were a child and something went wrong when no adult was around. How did you solve the problem?
*How can you give your kids more opportunities to be part of the real world rather than the virtual one?
*Modern technology makes it very easy to track our children’s whereabouts, grades, and even behavior electronically. This can become “the world’s longest umbilical cord.” Could you cut down on the ways in which you electronically track or watch your child in the real world? How?
*What problems do smartphones, social media, and screens solve in your own life and what problems do they create?
