JFK Weekly Update
November 3, 2024
Dear Families of JFK,
Diwali, also known as the “Festival of Lights,” is being celebrated on Oct. 31st and Nov. 1st and marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year. The word 'Diwali' comes from the Sanskrit word 'deepavali'. It means 'row of lights'. This is why people decorate their homes with lights and small oil lamps made from clay called 'diyas'. If you are celebrating, may Diwali bring new rays of hope, joy, and endless possibilities.
November is Native American and Alaska Native Heritage Month. This year’s them, 'Confronting Challenges and Forging New Pathways,' focuses on events and dialogue on the rich cultural history and traditions of Native American peoples and modern realities. Thank you to Maura Bayliss, our School Librarian,. for this resource. https://www.nea.org/professional-excellence/student-engagement/tools-tips/native-american-and-alaska-native-heritage-month?utm_source=edpractice&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=20241031_newsletter&ms=email_edpractice_20241031_newsletter&j=10370869&sfmc_sub=814775882&l=3525_HTML&u=184687017&mid=1059756&jb=12
Thank you to all the Room Parents for organizing the fall parties and all the family members who volunteered. Kids had a great time creating mummies, playing games and enjoying snacks.
Sincerely,
Saundra Watson, Principal

Family Literacy Month
Did you know November is Family Literacy Month? I know the beginning of the year is busy with after-school activities, establishing new routines, Open Houses, and ever-changing schedules. I always think of November as a time to reflect and prioritize moments that bring my family back together, and reading is one of the best activities you can do as a family.
Reading can be done anywhere and anytime. Listening to an audiobook on a long car ride or reading first thing in the morning before screens get turned on are some ideas for switching up your family’s reading routine.
To celebrate this month, I wanted to share some recommended titles for all families to enjoy together. Reading together has endless benefits and will surely spark lots of conversation. Kids are never too old to be read to! It builds their confidence, vocabulary, fluency, oral language skills, and comprehension. Here is a list of well-loved books to kickstart Family Literacy Month in your home!
Mysterious Benedict Society Series by Trenton Lee Stewart
Booked or any book by Kwame Alexandar
The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane or any Kate DiCamillo story
The Wild Robot by Peter Brown
Other Words for Home by Jasmine Warga
The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall
The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick
Wonder by R.J. Palacio
Out of My Dreams series by Sharon Draper
Anything you enjoyed as a child! We all have our favorite books from when we were young. Share this story with your child—it will be sure to spark a lot of conversation!
Do you have a book you recommend, or are you looking for additional ideas? Please let me know at aylwarde@cantonma.org.
Happy Reading!
Mrs. Aylward

In November, students in all grades will work on coordination and manipulative skills in a variety of different age-appropriate ways. Grade 5 has begun the PE Central skill challenge. This is a challenge done all over the country to test students’ skill in a variety of ways. The challenges can be viewed at www.pecentral.org. Grades 3-4 will do a variety of challenges and games using frisbees. Grades K-2 will be working with the jump ropes as well as doing a variety of jumping games and challenges. They will also be working on their foot skills and coordination. All students should practice different manipulative skills at home, such as catching and throwing. The more repetitions they receive, the better their skill and coordination will become. These are essential skills that will be needed more and more as they grow!
We completed the 5th grade basketball “Knockout” Tournament in October. We had many students do well with their shooting. Ultimately the top four finalists were: 1st Place Champion- Emily Joyce; 2nd Place- Kira Trainor; 3rd Place- Alex Bualoeng & 4th Place- Tyler Sansone. Congrats to all that made the final round!
The 5th Grade skating trip is scheduled for Friday, December 13th from 9:30-11:30 at the Metropolitan Skating Rink (aka Ponky). Permission slips were sent home and need to be returned ASAP. This is a great experience for our 5th grade students. Students will get 2 hours of ice time to work on learning/ enhancing skating skills, leadership skills, understanding differences, and other important social skills. 5th Grade parents interested in helping out should check the box on the permission slip or contact me (sasinm@cantonma.org) as soon as possible. Volunteers must be CORI checked with the main office, which should be done ASAP. Volunteers will meet us at the rink that day to help with on-ice skating skills, tying skates, and supervision both on and off the ice. We are looking forward to another great trip this year!
Grade 5 students participating in the “Get Fit” calendar program should hand in their first calendar for October ASAP. It should have their name on it, be signed by an adult, and have a minimum of 16 days of activity filled in. November calendars are now available in the file outside the gym. Calendars are accepted up to two weeks into the next month!
Lastly, as a reminder, students are expected to follow our “Golden Rules” every time they come to the gymnasium. They are to play safe, play fair, play hard (best effort), and be respectful. Please review this with your son/daughter as we are now almost 2 months into the year and students are expected to follow the golden rules of each class. Also, please have your child wear sneakers on the day he/she has Physical Education. Crocs, boots, and flip flops are not good for movement activities and dress shoes mark-up the gym floor. If it is rainy or snowy and they need to wear boots, then please pack a pair of sneakers in his/her bag. Students are expected to be prepared for class and ready to move their body. My goal is for all students to participate fully and improve their skills each week.

JFK Policies and Procedures
The Elementary Handbook contains important information regarding school operations, policies, curriculum, and discipline. Please take a moment to review it.
Please remember that students are not permitted to wear SmartWatches at school and cell phones must be put in their backpacks for the day. We encourage you to send your children without these devices. Please communicate with your classroom teacher, the Nurse and front office if your child needs their device for a medical issue.
Arrival & Dismissal
An important aspect of our community is keeping children safe during arrival and dismissal. I'd like to share our longstanding protocols and ask you to please comply. School administrators and the School Resource Officer will be working to enforce our procedures for the safety of everyone.
ARRIVAL:
Students arriving by car are dropped off in the parking lot by the playground. Please follow the flow of trafffic to assist us in making morning drop off as smooth as possible.
Parking is limited. All students K-5 are encouraged to walk or use the driveline.
Do not get out of your car in the driveline to assist your child. A staff member will be there to assist you.
Kids should exit on the passenger side only.
DISMISSAL:
Students are dismissed beginning at 3:25 PM. Parking is limited. Some suggestions to make the situation less stressful for everyone:
Avoid the traffic. You are encouraged to walk or park on streets adjacent to JFK.
Encourage independence. Pick a nearby meeting spot in the neighborhood and have your child walk off campus to meet you.
Avoid the awkwardness. You don’t want a staff member to talk to you about parking in the middle of the lot or in the handicap parking spots -- and we don’t want to talk to you about it. Please park in legal, marked spots only. If none are available please exit the lot and come back in five minutes.
Walkers will be dismissed onto the playground blacktop. An adult will wait with students until 3:40 PM. After that point students will be brought to the front office and a parent will be called.
Dog's are not allowed on the JFK property while school is in session, including during arrival and dismissal. Simply put, not everyone loves dogs as much as dog owners. In fact, your friendly, bouncy pup might be terrifying to someone who is two and a half feet tall. Dogs are welcome to ride along in the car for carline drop off and pick up. I'd especially ask community members who run their dog on the field (which is not technically allowed) to pick up after their dog so that teachers do not have to add student shoe-washing duty to their list of responsibilities. Thank you in advance.
