Superintendent's Corner (Staff)
Volume 1, No. 5 December 4, 2024
Opening Message
CBSD Team,
I hope everyone had a restful and rejuvenating Thanksgiving break. For me, it was an opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends, embrace a slower pace, and reflect on all that we’ve accomplished together during the first quarter in the Coos Bay School District. As we move into the December sprint, I’m filled with excitement and optimism about the important work ahead.
December offers a unique opportunity to recalibrate, refocus, and re-energize as we guide our students and teams through this busy but rewarding time of year. It’s a chance to double down on our collective goals, strengthen our commitment to ALL students, and build momentum that carries us into the new year. Let’s use this renewed energy to finish the calendar year strong, creating meaningful learning experiences and continuing to foster a sense of belonging.
As we return, let’s channel our energy into finishing these next three weeks before the holiday break with a laser focus on improving attendance, decreasing our secondary Fs, and increasing mathematics performance. This is a critical time to make meaningful strides in improving student outcomes. Together, we can build momentum that sets the foundation for continued success. As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, we are implementing a Sprint Goal process—a focused, time-bound effort to target specific priorities. Attendance, F rates, and SuccessMaker math minutes were chosen because they represent foundational elements of student success.
Improving CBSD student attendance ensures our students are present to learn, reducing F rates increases the likelihood of on-time graduation (3Es), and achieving the goal of 60 minutes per week in SuccessMaker mathematics builds critical skills for K-8 students, paving the way for long-term mathematics growth.
December Sprint Goals
Elementary Goals:
- Increase attendance rates by grade level.
- Achieve 60 minutes per week in SuccessMaker mathematics by grade level to enhance math proficiency.
Secondary Goals:
- Improve attendance rates by grade level.
- Reduce F rates, tracked by both grade level and departments, to promote academic success.
To support these efforts, we have established Sprint Teams across the district. These teams, composed of teachers, administrators, and support staff, will focus on specific goals in their schools (note: principals will be sharing the members for each Sprint Team).
To improve student outcomes in these three areas, it will take a collective effort from ALL staff members at each school. Teams will collaborate, monitor progress, and implement strategies to meet the objectives. The combined efforts of these dedicated groups are vital to achieving success, and I encourage everyone to communicate and share best practices within your teams.
