7 Strategies to Teach Conceptual Understanding in Math
Carnegie Learning provides an article on moving away from relying on math shortcuts and tricks by emphasizing deep conceptual understanding in math education, promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills among students.
Key points:
- Math education traditionally relies on shortcuts like mnemonic devices and rules without explaining their underlying principles, causing confusion when these tricks fail.
- Recent educational shifts prioritize teaching a thorough understanding of mathematical concepts over shortcuts, aiming to foster independent problem-solvers.
- Strategies recommended include using a structured scope and sequence with spiral review, employing high-order tasks to build critical thinking, integrating visual representations and manipulatives, emphasizing connections between concepts, linking math to real-world applications, and fostering collaborative learning experiences to deepen mathematical understanding.
