🥳 HSSL School Year Kick Off Pep Rally 🥳
As the 2023-2024 school year begins, the New York Civil Liberties Union is once again seeking teens to join the Teen Activist Project (TAP), a youth leadership program focused on social justice, youth activism, and the law. The NYCLU’s youth program began as the Teen Health Initiative in 1997, founded with the mission of removing barriers that prevent young people from accessing critical health services and information. Today, TAP carries out the mission of the Teen Health Initiative and works on a wide range of NYCLU advocacy issues.
The TAP program will meet fully in-person this upcoming school year. TAP will meet at least once a week on Monday’s from 4:15-6:15pm and brings together teens from all over the NYC area to discuss civil liberties issues, such as students’ rights, confidential health care rights for minors, racial justice, immigrants’ rights, LGBTQ rights, freedom of speech – and more. TAP members get hands-on training in peer education and community organizing. The program offers students the opportunity to learn about civil rights issues affecting their communities, develop youth-led advocacy campaigns, and work with professionals on civil liberties issues.
Please share the attached flyers with students, teachers, and parents in your networks! Students can find the application here.
Be advised that we have extended our deadline to October 8th!
The program is ideal for youth interested in education policy, law, social justice, and community organizing. Students must be 14 to 21 years old and in a New York City high school or a GED program.
Our required meetings will be held fully in-person our office in the financial district. Students will participate in meetings that will take place either weekly or biweekly, depending on their availability and our spacing limitations. They can also opt to only join our email list. Youth who join are expected to remain in the program for the length of the school year. Community service hours are provided and stipends ranging from $200 to $600 are available upon completion of the program.
Meet-and-greets (interviews) will be held from October 10th to the 19th to invite applicants to learn about the NYCLU, the TAP program and meet our current TAP members.
Students can find the application here.
If your school has an Instagram account, you can also promote our program’s Instagram page here. Also, the NYCLU offers workshops on student rights in various situations (interacting with police, being stopped by ICE, as an LGBTQ+ student in NYC, and more). If you’d like for us to come present a workshop to your students, please head to this page and fill out a request.
The second part of our monthly series is next Wednesday, October 4th from 5:30-6:30pm. The topic will focus on supporting social media use, cyber bullying, and the social isolation occurring amongst our youth as a result of technology and social media activity. Please share the invitation with your families again as we'd love to continue with such a great turn out.
