Every School Day Matters!
Academic success for Colorado students starts with being in school on time every day. Every member of our community has a role to play in supporting student attendance and making attendance a priority is an important investment in your child’s academic and future success.
Did you know that… Missing just 10 percent of the school year in the early grades can leave many students struggling throughout elementary school. By grade 6, missing that much school is strongly correlated to the potential of course failure and high school dropout rates. 10 percent of the school year is equivalent to approximately 18 days of school or two to three days per month. In ninth grade, attendance is a better predictor than test scores that a student will leave before completing high school. What parents can do... ● Make sure your child understands that good attendance and being on time is very important. ● Continue to take an interest in your child’s education. Be involved, ask them what they are doing in school, and encourage them to get involved in school activities. Research shows that involvement in school activities has a positive impact on school success and good attendance! ● Discuss any problems your child may have at school. Communicate with teachers, their counselor, or an administrator about anything serious or that seems to be impacting their attendance. ● Do not let your child(ren) miss school for minor ailments. ● Whenever possible, arrange appointments and outings after school hours, during weekends or school holidays. This will help limit disruptions to your child’s education and to the school.
CCE’s Attendance Team will continue to send out courtesy emails to families whose student(s) have missed 10% of their school days since the beginning of the school year. The 10% is calculated using the total number of minutes missed, including full or partial days, whether excused or unexcused absences and/or tardies. Please note, that the district is requiring each school to monitor absenteeism and support families to address factors that may impact attendance. Our goal is to be proactive in order to keep families informed of their student(s) attendance and to collaborate with families about attendance needs.
