From the Principal

Kia ora koutou

At assembly this week I spoke with the students about the role of Head Student. I realised as I was speaking that the message I was communicating to them was the same message I have for all students.

My hope for students at Fiordland College is that they all see themselves as leaders of their learning. To do this they need to know that their unique skills and attributes are valuable to our entire community. Schools shouldn't be isolated places where learning solely happens for its students. If our goal is to have students become positive and contributing members of our community, then we need to make sure that our students can easily see how they can fit into that and how they can contribute to it. I'd love to see our entire community as our "classroom" and that as a community we can visibly see our students as contributors and active members of it.

Every student at Fiordland College deserves to go home at the end of the day and say that today was rad. That doesn’t mean that it won’t be challenging, and it doesn’t mean that it’ll always be fun. I want to make sure that as a school we are keeping the needs and wants of all of our students in mind so that we can build a curriculum and community that feels like it supports each and every one of us.

I also believe that our students should be able to easily work together. Collaboration builds a spirit of trust and belonging. Collaboration encourages us to share knowledge rather than protecting it for our personal use. As leaders of their own learning, students should be open to sharing what they are good at as well as recognising what they find challenging.

New Sign for Library

The College Library needed a sign to encourage young readers and brighten up the library area. Olivia O'Neill and Chloe White worked voluntarily on the sign after school during Term 3, with guidance from local artist Catriona Cunningham. They had to generate their own ideas and develop the project towards its final conclusion.

We are delighted with the sign and it is now in place, to be enjoyed by young readers for years to come. Thank you so much Olivia, Chloe and Catriona.

Northern Primary Tennis Competition

The Northern Primary Tennis Competition was held at the Te Anau Tennis Club last week. The competition was a huge success and Zack McMurtrie and Riley Carter both placed 2nd in their events.

Congratulations to Zack McMurtrie, Riley Carter, Maisie Gawith and Jonty Jones on qualifying for the Southland Primary Schools' Tennis Champs.
