We hope you enjoyed having off on Monday. Most importantly we hope that you took time to recognize why we had the day off. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the most influential figures in American history.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of fighting for justice and equality. His aspirations of peace and acceptance should be embraced and encouraged now and for all future generations. By reflecting on Dr. King's life and teachings, we can learn valuable lessons about the importance of standing up for what is right, working towards a more just society, and making a positive impact on the world around us.

MLK Fun Facts

  • His real name: Born Michael King Jr., he and his father changed their names to Martin Luther King in 1934, inspired by the German reformer Martin Luther.
  • Child prodigy: King skipped two grades in high school and entered college at the age of 15.
  • Almost a doctor (of a different kind): While known for his theology, King initially considered becoming a lawyer.
  • A skilled pool player: King enjoyed playing pool and was reportedly quite good at it.
  • "I Have a Dream" wasn't his first speech at the Lincoln Memorial: He spoke there in 1957 at the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom.
  • Jailed 29 times: King was frequently arrested for acts of civil disobedience, including for driving 30 mph in a 25 mph zone.
  • Survived an assassination attempt: In 1958, a woman stabbed him in the chest with a letter opener, narrowly missing his aorta.
  • A Star Trek fan: King admired Nichelle Nichols, the first African-American woman to have a major role on a television series, for her portrayal of Lt. Uhura on Star Trek.
  • Won a Grammy: His 1967 speech, "Why I Oppose the War in Vietnam," won a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Recording.

  • His wedding night was in a funeral parlor: Due to segregation, there were no hotels in Marion, Alabama that would accommodate a Black couple, so they stayed in a funeral parlor.
