October 20: “Celebration (and Blessing) of the Animals,” Rev. Alexander and Julie Konik
A Special Service downstairs in the Fellowship Hall…Please bring your well-behaved pet, or a photo or memento of an animal that has meant something important to you in your life.
On this Sunday, Rev. Alexander and Julie Konik will conduct an intergenerational/ interactive/participatory service in “Celebration (and blessing) of the Animals” downstairs in the fellowship hall. This service will provide us time to reflect on our kinship and connection with (and duty towards) the many different animals (whether domesticated or wild) in our lives. Both Rev. Alexander and Julie Konik will share brief reflections on the “kinship” that is possible between us and the animal kingdom…do be with us on this fun Sunday.
Oct. 27: "How Will You Spend Your Dash?" Day of the Dead, Rev. Tony Larsen
This Sunday is our annual Day of the Dead service ("Dia de los Muertos" in Spanish). Feel free to bring a photo or artifact from a loved one, to be brought up to our "altar" for our remembrance ritual. (If you don't have one--or you do but forget to bring it--don't worry, we will have little paper "tombstones" for you to fill out if you wish. We will have some special music from our own Rosa Gomez, and Tony's sermon will refer to the dash that lies in between the date of birth and the date of death, on many tombstones.
We will also present Britney with a farewell gift from her friends and appreciative members at UCN.
Tony Larsen was our minister here at Unitarian Church North for 4 years (2019-1023), having served before that at Olympia Brown UU in Racine for 40+ years. He was raised Catholic, and studied to be a Catholic priest for 10 years before being ordained to the Unitarian Universalist ministry. He received his B.A. in philosophy from Maryknoll College in 1971, his M.A. in theology from Maryknoll School of Theology in 1973, and his D.Min from Meadville/Lombard Theological School in 1975.
Saying Farewell
Help us Send Britney off to Los Angeles with our Love and an "Appreciation Purse"
While we are so sad to see Britney leave us at the end of October as she and her husband pursue professional opportunities in California, we rejoice with her on this exciting life transition. Britney has faithfully been with us for 6 years, she has so greatly enhanced our worship with her musical talents, and we want to send her on her way now with an "appreciation purse" that we gather from grateful members and friends.
Checks can be sent to UCN with "Britney appreciation" in the memo line...or you can contribute online. Go to https://ucnorth.breezechms.com/give/online
And on the first line where it asks "give to," scroll down to "Britney's Going Away."
We will be presenting Britney with her gift at the Oct. 27 service.

Processing the Upcoming National Election as a Trauma Event in our Lives
Dear Members and Friends of UCN,
As your minister, over the upcoming weeks (both before and after November 5th election) I will be focused on helping us both face and process what I believe to be a significant trauma event in our shared lives. While nothing like the trauma of a hurricane or tornado or flood, the terrible dynamics of this election have made us all anxious, disheartened and fearful…and I believe that (whether we are fully aware of it or not) we are already experiencing trauma that is dangerous to our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
For me as a Unitarian Universalist, this trauma has two obvious dimensions:
1) I am terribly worried that a slight majority of the electorate may make a terribly wrong choice, sending America spiraling down a mean, dark, divisive and destructive path.
2) I am already experiencing incredible disbelief (and profound grief) that so many of my fellow citizens seem willing to support a hateful, racist, xenophobic, misogynistic, homophobic, compassionless, excusatory and backward-looking vision of what America must be.
And no matter what the actual outcome of the election is -- and whether we succeed in settling the results without falsehoods and violence, something I am not at all sure of – we still we face the on-going, and unrelenting trauma of having a nation deeply divided between “Right” and “Left.”
Because of all these painful concerns and more, I will be devoting the Sunday before the election, November 3, to an “Election Sermon” addressing what we together face…and the Sunday after the election, November 10, to the topic of “So, Where Do We Go From Here?”
Also, we have scheduled a special congregational “REFLECTON AND SUPPORT” SESSION at 6:30 on Thursday evening, November 7th for us as a community to process the election and its on-going ramifications.
I know that all of you share my awareness of how terribly monumental and important this election is to us as a people of faith and Americans -- so very much is humanly at stake. Please be in touch with me personally if you have other concerns, and join with the other members and friends of the congregation as together we work to process this trauma and move forward.
Hurricane Relief
In compassionate response to the devastation across North Carolina caused by Hurricane Helene, UCN held a special collection that will be sent to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Asheville. There are other UU churches in North Carolina that have also been impacted by the storm, as well as yet another hurricane that hit Florida hard this week. If you would like to help our southern neighbors recover from the damage, here are a few options:
UUA Disaster Relief Fund: https://www.uua.org/giving/disaster-relief-page
American Red Cross: www.redcross.org
Salvation Army: give.salvationarmyusa.org
Religious Education
OWL classes will be held this Sunday, but there will be no classes for the K-2nd and 3rd-6th students this week; instead we are having a special intergenerational service. The congregation will have a “Celebration (and blessing) of the Animals.” In this service we will reflect on our kinship, connection and duty to animals in our lives. The service will be downstairs in the Fellowship Hall, and you are invited to bring your well-behaved pet, or a photo or memento of an animal that has meant something important to you in your life.
OWL will also be meeting on October 27th, while the younger students will participate in our annual Day of the Dead/"Dia de los Muertos" service. Rev. Tony will refer to the dash that lies in between the date of birth and the date of death. Feel free to bring a photo or artifact from a loved one, to be brought up to our "altar" for our remembrance ritual.
Immediately following service on the 27th, we will be holding our annual Trunk or Treat, with Halloween-festooned car trunks, candy and other surprises, games, a costume contest, and a simple kid-oriented lunch. Please join us; the more the merrier! Contact Katie Egan-Bruhy (egan.bruhy@gmail.com; 262-339-2104) if you would like to help with games or food.
Social and Racial Justice
Replacement Shoelaces Needed
Jean Woodmansee asks UCN members and friends to bring new or used shoelaces to UCN help migrants asking for asylum in Arizona. The Border Patrol agents require migrants to remove shoelaces and belts when they are picked up in the desert and returned to Mexico. Migrants have no other source of replacement shoelaces for boots or shoes except through the efforts of the nearby UU church and other volunteers.
I have been active with that UU church near Tucson for many years and have participated by providing food, clothing and bedding for those returned to Mexico. My inspiration for those efforts was learning that approximately 200 migrants per year in the Tucson sector were dying of dehydration in the desert while the locals and vacationers lounged in pools.
Dedicated UU members and others drive in the desert looking for migrants needing help and calling out in Spanish in case people are hiding from their trucks in the scrub and cactus. It is forbidden for volunteers to transport people in need of services, so the volunteers will call for help from the Border Patrol or emergency services.
Collecting shoelaces is one easy way for us to participate in helping the migrants. A collection box is in the west lobby near the food and pet food collections through November. Thanks!

Please Note
If you are discarding furniture to the dumpster area, please do not put it in the dumpster. Please place the furniture either inside the fenced area or on the east side of the fence on the concrete pad. When the dumpster becomes full of furniture, there is no place for regular trash to be stored and must be left outside the dumpster itself. This gives those four-legged critters an invitation to rip open the plastic bags and spread trash everywhere. Thank you for your support.
