PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Good afternoon Roadrunner Families,
We had a fantastic week at Westwood Elementary filled with fun and celebration! On Wednesday, we were honored to host state assembly member Brian Maienschein and several Poway Unified School District Board members, along with our site and district leadership, as we received a $5,000 check from the Barona Chairman (see picture below). This generous grant, applied for by former principal Jennie Mikels, will support our Positivity Project. We are incredibly grateful for their support!
On Thursday, our Roadrunners participated in the Apex Fun Run, running enthusiastically to raise funds for our school. I’m thrilled to report that we shattered our previous fundraising record this year! Thank you and our PTA for your amazing support throughout this two-week event.
We wrapped up the week with a wonderful Friday Flag assembly, where we recognized students for exemplifying our Character Counts traits. We even had a fun game where students turned Matt from the Apex Team and me into toilet-paper mummies!
Looking ahead, we’re excited to participate in PTA-sponsored Red Ribbon Week (see daily theme calendar below), encouraging our students to commit to a drug-free lifestyle. We’ll also have our PTA Boo Bash to cap off the week on Friday night. Please take a moment to review the important information below regarding upcoming events and our guidelines.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership!
In partnership,
Bill Egan

RED RIBBON WEEK
HALLOWEEN GUIDELINES
Dear Westwood Students and Families,
As the festive spirit of Halloween approaches, we are excited to see the creativity and enthusiasm our students bring to the celebration. Our primary objective is to ensure that all students enjoy this special day in a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment.
To that end, we kindly ask everyone to adhere to the following PUSD guidelines when choosing their costumes for any school-related Halloween events:
1. **No Masks:** For the safety of our students and staff, and to ensure everyone can be easily recognized, please refrain from wearing masks. Face paint or makeup is welcomed as an alternative.
2. **Avoid Gore or anything Promoting Violence:** Costumes depicting excessive gore, horror, or violence (including weapons or replicas such as swords or guns) can be misconstrued and lead to unnecessary distress or concern.
3. **Be Culturally Respectful:** Halloween is an opportunity for fun and creativity, not unintentional harm. Please avoid costumes that appropriate or misrepresent cultures, or might be seen as stereotypical or offensive. Let’s celebrate in a way that respects the diverse backgrounds and experiences of all members of our school community.
4. **Avoid Overly Loud or Noisy Accessories:** Items that make excessive noise are not allowed. This includes bells, whistles, sirens, or any electronic devices that produce loud sounds.
5. **Modesty Matters:** Costumes should still adhere to the school’s dress code. Please ensure that outfits are not too revealing and suitable for the educational setting.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in ensuring a positive atmosphere for all. If you have any questions or need clarification on what's appropriate, please do not hesitate to reach out to the school office.
Dear Families,
This week, our school will focus on the character strength of Creativity. Creativity means coming up with new and original ways to think about and do things.
Creative people see the world differently. They are open to new experiences and think independently. They come up with many ideas and pursue them with energy and enthusiasm. Creativity takes courage because sharing original ideas can sometimes lead to criticism.
Creativity is vital to our world! Creative solutions can help resolve conflicts and find compromises that satisfy everyone involved, strengthening relationships. It helps us solve tough problems, create new things, and see the world in fresh ways. Examples include treatments for deadly illnesses, such as cancer, the invention of the cell phone, and the development of solar panels. Imagine life without Impressionist paintings or the creation of airplanes and rocket ships.
To encourage creativity with your child at home, visit the Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families. There, you can watch a video, read a quote, and discuss three questions together.
Thank you for your continued support!
