Jacob's Family
How do you show love to your family?
Jacob had tricked his father into giving him the inheritance blessing, and Esau was furious. Rebekah heard through the grapevine that Esau planned to kill Jacob once their father died. So Rebekah told Jacob to flee to her brother back in her homeland. At Rebekah’s urging, Isaac instructed Jacob not to marry a Canaanite woman and sent Jacob off to Laban with the blessing of Abraham. After a journey of hundreds of miles, Jacob arrived at a well and asked some shepherds if they knew Laban, son of Nahor. They pointed Jacob to Rachel, Laban’s daughter, and Jacob was overjoyed. It was love at first sight for Jacob. But life isn’t that simple.
Jacob still had a few lessons to learn.
Opening Prayer

Talk about it
- What was the name of the woman Jacob wanted to marry?
- How did Rachel and Leah’s father trick Jacob?
- How did God bless Jacob?
- How has God blessed us through Jacob's family and through our families?
Jacob wanted to marry Rachel, but her father gave her sister Leah to Jacob as a wife first.
Just as Jacob had tricked his father and older brother to get the blessing, he was tricked by Laban. Jacob worked to marry Rachel, but Laban gave him Leah instead. Jacob had to work seven more years for Rachel to be his wife.
(Note: Having more than one wife was common in the culture at the time of this Bible narrative, but it is not God’s will for a person to have two wives or husbands.)
God still worked good in this situation. God gave Jacob twelve sons. From these twelve sons came the twelve tribes of Israel, God's special people. God later healed the broken relationship between Jacob and Esau.
Jesus our Savior was born from the line of Judah, one of Jacob’s sons! Talk about how God blesses you through your family!
