Shooting Hoops and Building Relationships
Students at Elderton Elementary were part of the team, the West Shamokin basketball team that is! The boys and girls junior varsity and varsity basketball teams visited Elderton where they participated in a school-wide assembly. The assembly focused on making responsible choices and teamwork. Next, the Elderton students got to cheer on their favorite players as the West Shamokin crew put on a quick game.
After the school-wide assembly, each grade worked in small groups with the high school players. Students learned basketball skills such as dribble and shooting drills, agility training with ladder drills, games, and completed craft activities. The engaging activities and high school students helped make this a memorable day at Elderton!
Growing Minds with Hands-On Science
Elderton Elementary students were cultivating their science knowledge throughout the week of March 18. The Mobile Agriculture Education Science Lab visited Elderton Elementary and brought a variety of hands-on science activities with it. This is a 40-foot mobile classroom that travels across the state of Pennsylvania bringing an interactive field trip style experience directly to schools and students in grades K-8. The Mobile Ag Lab is equipped with over 30 STEM-based science experiments and lessons, a certified teacher, and all the supplies needed for a hands-on learning experience. Each science experiment is designed to emphasize a different aspect of agriculture, including Pennsylvania’s commodities, the environment, biotechnology, food and fiber. While participating in the science labs, students work cooperatively to solve a problem as they form a hypothesis, collect data and draw conclusions while focusing on the scientific method. Each lesson on the Mobile Ag Lab focuses on increasing student knowledge on the importance of agriculture and its impact on their daily lives. Elderton Elementary students harvested the benefits of this unique learning opportunity.
Celebrating Positive Choices and Outstanding Students
Thursday, March 21, was “pawsitively” a great day for Elderton Elementary students as they reaped the benefits of their positive choices. Students who earned the third grading period’s PAWS reward were treated to a movie and popcorn with their friends, along with slushies provided by Elderton’s PTA. Students earned the reward through their positive behaviors. These included showing their personal best, acting responsibly, working and playing safely, and showing respect to peers and adults. Smiles, snacks, and slushies were seen throughout the movie showings as Elderton celebrated our “pawsitively” outstanding students.

Best. Day. Ever.
The Scholastic Book Fair traveled to Elderton Elementary during the month of March. Students in all classes had time to visit the fair, browse the books, and peruse the pens, pencils, and posters. From picture books to chapter books and from new bestsellers to beloved classics, the book fair had something for everyone. Students were able to make their own selections, and this choice in reading is a great motivator for kids to get reading!
Elderton’s PTA sponsored the event. Parents and guardians graciously volunteered their time and energy to setting up, running, and cleaning up the book fair. Smiles were seen on all the faces as Elderton students left the book fair as proud readers.
